飲み会サークルからラリー優勝チームへ 九工大「e-car」の軌跡

九州工業大学情報工学部の電気自動車開発プロジェクト「e-car」をご存じだろうか。

九州工業大学情報工学部の電気自動車開発プロジェクト「e-car」をご存じだろうか。

地元の豆腐屋から譲り受けたトレノ86を電気自動車にコンバート、四国EVラリーの鉛酸バッテリ・単相200V以下の部門で2度優勝し昨年の「Maker Faire Tokyo 2014」にも出展。多くのMakerたちの注目を集めた。

ここまで聞くと伝統ある常勝チームかと思いきや、かつてはたまに市役所のゴミ拾いをしながらメインの活動は「飲み会」という、今の姿からは想像できない過去があった。

先生も学生も専門外でゼロからのスタート、資金面から技術面までさまざまな壁を乗り越え、電気自動車レースで活躍するまでの軌跡を伺った。(文・撮影 越智 岳人)

昔はテニスをしないテニスサークルだった

e-carは福岡県飯塚市にある九州工業大学情報工学部に在籍する17人で構成されている。取材当日に乗せてもらった電気自動車は車検も通しているので公道の走行も可能だ。

e-carで飯塚市内から九州工業大学へ移動する様子。コンバート車とはいえ静かな走行音とスムーズな走りだしは市販のEV車やハイブリッドカーと変わらない。

e-carが発足したのは5年前。

「ある日、学生が僕のところに来てサークルの顧問になってほしいと言ってきて、何のサークルなのって聞いたら『ボランティア』って言うので承諾しました。しばらくして『先生、サークルの活動日なので来ませんか?』って誘われて行ってみたら飲み会だった(笑)」(九州工業大情報工学研究院パナート・カチョーンルンルアン助教)

「当時は楽しく飲み会をやるのがメインで、テニスをしないテニスサークルみたいな感じだったと聞いています」(e-car部長 宮川伸男さん)

e-carのみなさん。全員、九州工業大学の飯塚キャンパスに在籍する学生だ(右から河村純吉さん、岩崎卓真さん、備後博生さん、宮川伸男さん、川越孔志さん、幸諒真さん、矢野春花さん、中山慎也さん、山本駿稀さん)

当時は「何か楽しい事ができればいい」という趣旨のもと、ときどき飯塚市内でゴミ拾い活動をするが、メインの活動は部員同士の飲み会という典型的なお遊び系サークルだった。そんなサークルの活動を見た鈴木裕教授(現在は退官)の一言が、全てを変えるきっかけになる。

「大学内にスペースを用意するから電気自動車を作ってみないかと言われたのが始まりでした。とはいえ、どうやって開発したらいいかも分からないし、どれぐらい予算が必要かも分からない。私も専門は電気自動車ではなく、車が好きなだけで、本当に手探りの段階から始まりました」(パナートさん)

最初に連絡を取ったのは当時既に電気自動車を作っていた福岡工業大学だった。そこで必要なものや大まかな予算、ガソリン車からの改造の方法などを学んだ。

その頃、近所のお豆腐屋さんから中古の自動車を譲ってもらえることになる。

「うちに乗ってないトレノ86(トヨタのスプリンタートレノAE86型)があるから使っていいよと連絡があって、譲り受けたトレノをベースに電気自動車にコンバートするプロジェクトが始まりました」(パナートさん)

福工大に行って電池とモーターとバッテリ、あとはそれらを制御する機構があれば何とかなるだろうと思ったが、いきなり高い壁にぶつかった。

ガソリン車を電気自動車にコンバートするにあたって、最初のステップはエンジンを取り外し、電気自動車のモーターを搭載する事だ。

最大のボトルネックは福工大で見た電気自動車と、譲り受けたトレノの駆動方式が違っていたことだった。福工大の電気自動車はFF(前輪駆動)、一方トレノ86はFR(後輪駆動)で構成部品や構造も大きく異なる。

「FF車で、ギアボックスがボディに固定された場合制約条件なくモーターに入れ替えれば、車輪を駆動させられますが、FR車の場合はエンジンを外すと、ギアボックスが後方の車輪を駆動するプロペラシャフトに繋がるだけでボディに固定されていません。単純に言えば、FR車の場合モーターの固定はギアボックスとボディの間に入る制約条件がありますので、非常に難しかった。最初にコンバートされたFF車を見て『これはできそうだな』という自信がありましたが、FR車でやってみるうちに『あれ、思ってたのと何か違うぞ』と(笑)」(パナートさん)

そこからは主にネットで解決方法を探し、既にコンバート車を作っている人たちによる海外のブログなどを参考に試行錯誤を重ねる日々が続いた。

「当時は毎日活動していたわけではなく、気が向いたら集まってやろうという感じで、エンジンを外すことすらままならず、入れ替えるだけで1年かかりました。時間がかかり過ぎたことでメンバーのモチベーションは上がるどころか下がってしまい、活動がさらに停滞した時期もありました。今となっては反省すべき点がたくさんありましたが、当時は全て手探りだったので、そういった大変さもありました」(パナートさん)

それでも、なんとかエンジンとモーターの入れ替えに成功。

「必要な機構の模型を作って形状を確認して、問題ないとわかったら、設計図を学生が描いて業者の方に加工依頼を出したり、EV車用のモーターを海外から輸入して2年目でようやくなんとか学内を走れる程度にまで持っていくことができました」(パナートさん)

むき出しの状態から車検に通すまで

ようやく校内を走れるようになった電気自動車を見た学生が少しずつe-carに参加するようになる。

「僕はもともと電子工作のサークルに入っていて、e-carに携わっていた友達に見せてもらったのがきっかけです。その当時は全然きれいじゃなくて、バッテリもモーターもむき出し。エンジンルームも開けっ放しの状態でした。でも、すごいと思いましたね。こんな状態でも走るんだという」(岩崎さん)

当時はバッテリの位置も今と違い、重量バランスもでたらめな状態。よく見ると車体が後ろに傾いている状態だった。

「バッテリの位置を前に移動して、しっかり固定するための台を作ったり、配線も高電圧がかかって感電する危険があったので、保護チューブで覆うような対策をしたりしました」(岩崎さん)

そうして部員も少しずつ増え、車検を通すという目標が現実味を帯びてきたが、限られた予算の中でやりくりするのは大変だ。何より自動車改造に必要なものはすべて自分たちでそろえる必要があった。

「自分たちで自由に使える工具も機材も無くて、そういったものを予算の中で買い足す必要もありました。大学からの予算にも上限があり、申請を出しても満額が出ない場合もあるので、予算がショートして活動が止まった期間もありました」(岩崎さん)

予算や環境面の制約はありながらも、福工大や陸運局に通い、車検を通すための開発を進めていった。

「福工大が車検を通した当時から内容も変わっていて、今の車検だったら(福工大は)通らないかもしれないという話もあり、福岡市の陸運局まで通いながら開発していました」(岩崎さん)

電気自動車を作る大学生チームの熱意に陸運局の担当者も感心し、親切に対応してもらえたのが励みになったという。

「その当時はまだ電気自動車の車検も今ほど確立していなくて、年々厳しくなってきている印象がありました。加えて、僕たちの場合はコンバートEVなので、改造申請を出して安全性を証明する必要がありました。それが通らないと車検は受けられません。感電対策も大丈夫ですよとか、入れ替えたモーターの安全性能も証明したり、構造計算書を用意したり大変でした」(岩崎さん)

EVラリー参戦直前でようやく通った車検

そうして少しずつ着実に前進していく中で新しい目標が生まれた。四国EVラリーへの参戦だ。

四国EVラリーは1998年から毎年8月に開催され、企業や社会人チーム、大学などの学生チームが四国を舞台に走行距離やコース内にあるポイントを競う。国内では唯一の公道を走行する電気自動車だけのラリーでもある。

しかし、レースまであと6カ月という状況でも車検に通せる状況ではなく、毎日夜遅くまでキャンパスに残って作業に没頭した。その頃には地元自治体や商工会議所の支援もあり、車検や改造証明に必要なものの準備やラリーに向けた車両の軽量化を猛スピードで進めていった。

そうした努力の結果、なんとか車検に通りレースに参戦できるようになったのは、レース本番の3日前だった。

「もう本当にギリギリでした。個人的にはラリーで優勝した時よりも車検に通ったほうが嬉しくて、今でも思い出すと鳥肌が立つぐらい。アカデミックな世界にいると、その外にある社会との間にある高い壁と向き合わなくてはならない感覚があって、一般の研究であれば大学と社会の間にさまざまな企業や自治体があるけど、e-carは大学で作ったものが直接『車検』という社会に出る、これまで見たことのない世界だったんですね」(パナートさん)

そうしてギリギリに通った車検証とナンバープレートを取り付けたe-carを地元の自動車整備士さんに輸送してもらい、なんとかレース参戦が実現した。

ラリーは走行車と、それを後ろでモニタリングする後続車、そして本部で情報収集と指令を出す待機班の3チームに分かれる。

1カ月前にコースが発表され、前日にコースを下見して走行ルートを決める。充電やメンテナンスも含め48時間の間にどれだけポイントを稼ぐか、トラブルも想定に入れながら立てる入念な計画と準備が勝敗を分ける。

コースは毎回変わり、起伏の多い山道のコースの場合は消費する電力量も考慮しなければならない。

「初日の夜はライバルチームと比べてどれぐらい走ったらいいか、バッテリの残量から逆算して、いつどれぐらい充電すればどれだけ走れるかを、ホテルで夜中に4時間ぐらい作戦会議してました」(宮川さん)

「本部のモニタに表示される各車に取り付けられたGPS情報を見ながら、待機班はライバルの動きも見つつ、『こっちに行ったほうがポイントが高いから次で曲がって』とか指示を出して、充電の準備をするんです。後続車はエアコンが効いてましたが、僕らは軽量化のためにエアコンは全部外したので、窓開けはなして電池式の小さい手持ち扇風機でなんとか乗り切る感じでした」(e-Car部員の備後さん)

「あと、くじ運にも悩まされましたね......。チェックポイントを回って帰ってくる度にコンピュータによるくじ引きでボーナスポイントがもらえるんですけど、ライバルが7点とか8点獲得してる中、1点を連発してしまって(笑)」(e-Car部員の幸諒真さん)

そうして、さまざまなトラブルと戦いながらも、e-carは「鉛酸バッテリー部門」で1位、その後も2年目は2位、3年目は1位と好成績を収める。

「EVラリーに出てからは優勝し続けるためには何をすべきか、例えば車体の軽量化や熱の問題をどう解決していくか、学生が自ら考え取り組んでいくようサポートするのが私の役目になりました。そういった授業では得られない経験を自分の五感を駆使しながら経験できる場ができたというのが、大学としての最大の成果になったと思います」(パナートさん)

マニアックな質問と専門的なアドバイスに驚いたMaker Faire Tokyo

東京ビッグサイトで開催されたMaker Faire Tokyo2014にも参加。マニアックな質問が矢継ぎ早に飛んできて驚いたそうだが、ここでもラリーで培った軌道修正力が発揮された。

「一応、問答集も用意していて、学内や飯塚市のイベント展示の際には、一般の方からの質問に問題なく対応できていたんですけど、Maker Faireは質問のレベルが全然違いました。コントローラの中身とか重量バランスとか、いままで聞かれたことがない類いの質問ばかりで」(宮川さん)

「1日目の夜にいろんな資料をあたって調べて、翌日には答えられるように準備しましたね」(備後さん)

「航続距離を伸ばすのに電圧を上げたらいいとか、回生ブレーキつけるにはどうしたらいいとか、そういう細かなアドバイスをもらいました。『車重バランスは前のほうが重たいほうがいいよ』とか、『回生ブレーキをつけるにはどうしてもトラクションがかからないので、前が重たいほうがいいけど、これはFRだからな』みたいな話をしていました。僕たちも他のブースを回りましたけど、みんな好きでやっていてすごく熱く語ってくれて、参加してよかったです」(宮川さん)

「IntelのブースでEdisonを無料配布するワークショップがあって、先着30名だったので朝から3時間ぐらい並びました。スケルトニクスやドローンの展示も良かったですね」(幸さん)

飲み会サークルから5年で大きな変化を遂げたe-car。学内外で注目される存在になり、部員は17人に増え活動の幅も広がった。今後の目標はさらに大きなレースに参戦すること、そして自動車の性能をさらに上げていくことだ。

日本EVフェスティバルという、筑波サーキットでの1時間耐久レースに参戦するのが次の目標です。四国EVラリーに参加していたチームが日本EVフェスティバルにも出ていたので、僕らも出てもいいんじゃないかなと思って」(宮川さん)

「今年は改良がメインになって行くと思いますが、中でも自動運転には重点的に取り組む予定です」(宮川さん)

もともと情報工学を専攻する学生が集まるサークルなので、ソフトウェアからのアプローチは彼らの本分でもある。

「自動でハンドルを動かすのはだいぶ先になりますが、まずは画像処理技術を使って、道に飛び出してくるものを検知したり、自動車の情報をモニタリングできるようにしたいです。ZMPを訪問したとき社長の谷口さんがおもちゃの車で自動運転の開発を始めたと教えてくれたので、僕たちもおもちゃから始めたいと思います」(備後さん)

「もっと航続距離を伸ばしたいので、電圧データをスマホでも見られるようにして、ログ化したデータからボトルネックを把握できるようにするつもりです。データを収集して解析して、どれだけ性能が上がったか数値化できるようにしたいです。僕たちは情報工学の学生なので、そういったデータをまとめて次につなげるというのはとても大事なミッションだと思います」(岩崎さん)

次の目標を語る学生たちの目は生き生きとしていて、話しぶりからも自分たちの力で道を切り拓いたという強い自信が伝わってきた。e-carの挑戦はこれからも続いていく。
