エジプトの首都カイロ郊外の軍施設近くで2013年7月8日未明(日本時間同日午前)、モルシ前大統領を支持する「ムスリム同胞団」のデモ隊に軍や治安部隊などが発砲した。救急当局は少なくとも51人が死亡、435人が負傷したと明らかにした。同胞団は「軍や治安部隊による虐殺だ」と非難する声明を出した。朝日新聞デジタルが伝えた。
時事通信によると、共和国防衛隊司令部の入り口前で座り込みを続けていたデモ隊が未明の礼拝をしていたところ、軍がデモ隊の前後から発砲してきたといい、通りのビルの屋上には数人の狙撃手の姿もあったという。
NHKによると、治安部隊を管轄する内務省と軍は、8日、会見を開き、衝突現場で撮影されたとする映像を見せながら「銃や火炎瓶で武装したデモ隊が、警備隊の建物に突入してきたため治安部隊が応戦した」と説明し、治安部隊の対応に問題はなかったと改めて主張。そのうえで「法律を犯す行為には断固として対処する」と述べ、今後もデモ隊による暴力や威嚇には実力行使も辞さない姿勢を示した。
中東の衛星テレビ局アルアラビーヤによると、暫定大統領の報道官は7日夜、首相ポストについて、有力視されていたエルバラダイ国際原子力機関(IAEA)前事務局長に代わり、ビジネス関係の弁護士、バハーエッディーン氏を軸に調整が進められていると述べた。エルバラダイ氏は、副大統領での処遇が検討されていると産経新聞は伝えている。
