マララさんへのメッセージ絵本出版 翻訳の西田佳子さん「差別や貧困に苦しむ子供が本の主役」

ノーベル平和賞を受賞したマララ・ユスフザイさんへ、世界中の女の子たちから寄せられたメッセージを写真とともに掲載した写真絵本が発売された。

17歳という史上最年少でノーベル平和賞を受賞した少女、マララ・ユスフザイさんの授賞式が12月10日、ノルウェーの首都オスロで行われる。マララさんへ世界中の女の子たちから寄せられたメッセージを美しい写真とともに掲載した絵本「マララさん こんにちは 世界でいちばん勇敢な少女へ」(文ローズマリー・マカーニー、西村書店)が11月に発売された。

絵本の翻訳者で、マララさんの自伝「わたしはマララ 教育のために立ち上がり、タリバンに撃たれた少女」も訳した西田佳子さんが、ハフポスト日本版に次のようなコメントを寄せた。

この本は、「すべての女の子が教育を受ける権利がある」と訴えるマララさんの活動に共感し、勇気づけられた女の子たちの声を集めたものです。

「女の子だから学校に行けない」「女の子だからまだ幼いうちに結婚させられる」といった現実に苦しむ女の子たちが、マララさんとともに声をあげることを決意しました。この写真絵本を通して、彼女たちの叫びに耳を傾けてみてください。こんな女の子たちがいるという現実に思いを寄せてみてください。

注目すべきはマララさんだけではないし、写真にうつっている女の子だけでもありません。声をあげることもできずにいる女の子、学校に行くことができない子──差別や貧困や搾取に苦しんでいる子どもたちすべてが、この本の主役なのです。

■「マララはわたしたちの代表だから」

マララさんはパキスタン出身。2012年10月、女子教育の権利を訴えていたことでイスラム過激派に銃撃された。イギリスに運ばれて治療を受け、命を取り留めた。

この絵本は、「親愛なるマララへ あなたに会ったことはないけれど、なんだか親しみを感じるわ。」と始まる。インドネシアやニカラグア、ネパールペルー、ニジェール、エルサルバドルなど世界中の少女たちの写真が続く。「みんな、あなたといっしょに手をあげるよ。マララはわたしたちの代表だから。」

巻末では、2013年7月12日のマララさんの誕生日「マララ・デー」にマララさんが国連でスピーチした内容を子供向けにわかりやすく紹介している。
