イギリス・マンチェスターの屋内競技場で5月22日夜（現地時間）に起きた爆発事件は、少なくとも約70人の死傷者が出る惨事となった。現場では当時、10代、20代を中心に人気があるアメリカのアリアナ・グランデさん（23）のコンサートが開かれており、犠牲者の多くが若者だった可能性がある。
「10代や子ども、その親たちが犠牲になった可能性がある」。イギリスの新聞「インディペンデント」は事件についてそう伝えた。FOXニュースも「コンサート会場の外には、娘たちを待つ親たちがいた」と報じ、事件当時、会場に集まっていた多くは若者だったことを強調した。
グランデさんは歌手をやりながら女優業もこなし、世界中の若者たちから人気だ。日本でも2017年の「日本ゴールドディスク大賞」で、過去1年間に最も活躍したアーティストに贈られる「アーティスト・オブ・ザ・イヤー」（洋楽部門）を初めて受賞した。自身も日本に好意的で、日本語の練習ノートをツイッターで公開したり、2016年の熊本地震のときには被災地に向けて激励の言葉をツイッターで投稿したりするなど話題を呼んだ。

グランデさんは事件後、自身の公式ツイッターで「傷つきました。心の底から本当に残念です。言葉が見つかりません」と投稿した。
