イラクのアバディ首相は6月17日、過激派組織IS（イスラム国）が2014年から支配していた西部の都市ファルージャを奪還したと宣言した。BBCなどが報じた。
イラク軍は5月23日からファルージャ奪還の軍事作戦を開始し、住民に安全な場所に避難するよう呼びかけていた。軍事作戦が進む中、ISは住民を「人間の盾」にして抵抗していた。また、戦闘員が避難民に紛れて脱出を図ろうとし、500人近くを拘束していた。
政府軍はファルージャ南方と東方の2方面から中心部に進み、行政庁舎がある地域を制圧した。政府側は行政庁舎にイラク国旗を掲げた。
アバディ首相はテレビ演説で「約束通り、我々イラク軍部隊がファルージャを解放した」と述べ、Twitterにも奪還作戦が成功したと述べた。
ファルージャは国の手に戻った。次の戦闘はモスルだ。ダーイシュ（イスラム国）は敗北するだろう。
