なでしこジャパン、連覇ならず――。

日本時間7月6日朝に行われたFIFA女子ワールドカップの決勝戦、日本は5−2でアメリカに敗れ、優勝を逃した。

立ち上がり、高さを警戒する日本に対してアメリカは低くて速いボールでクロスを入れて意表を突き、前半3分と5分に2点を奪い、試合を優位に進める。思わぬ失点で浮足立ったところにさらに前半16分までに2点を失い、日本には苦しい展開になった。

その後、大儀見の個人技で1点を奪い、後半立ち上がりにセットプレーからの長いボールを相手がオウンゴール。2点差へと詰めるがその直後にコーナーキックの折り返しを叩きこまれ万事休す。5−2で試合を終えた。

アメリカは1999年大会以来、4大会ぶり3度目の優勝。日本は2012年のロンドン・オリンピックの決勝に続き、アメリカに優勝を阻まれた。

日本にとっては立ち上がりに相手の用意してきた作戦にハマってしまったことが響いた。しかし、点差が開いてもまったく諦めることなくボールを追い続ける選手の姿は印象深いものがあった。
