アメリカ・コロラド州で、環境保護局（EPA）の職員が、廃鉱になった鉱山の廃水を流出させる事故が起き、川がオレンジ色に染まった。

アメリカ・コロラド州で8月5日、環境保護局（EPA）の職員が、廃鉱になった鉱山の廃水約300万ガロン（1100万リットル）を誤って川に流出させる事故が起き、川がオレンジ色に染まった。廃水には有毒物質が含まれており、EPAは川に近付かないよう住民に呼びかけている。10日、CNNなどが報じた。

ニューヨーク・タイムズによると、EPA職員はこの日、廃鉱になったゴールドキング鉱山の貯水場に貯めてあった汚水をくみ出す作業を行う予定だったが、誤って坑道に穴を開けるミスを犯し、汚水が流出。近くを流れる小川に流れ込んだ。小川はアニマス川に合流しており、下流のニューメキシコ州などに大規模な汚染が広がった。

廃水には高濃度のヒ素や銅、カドミウムといった重金属が含まれているとされ、環境被害への懸念が高まっている。一方でコロラド州の衛生当局者は11日、初期検査の結果、今回の鉱山廃水流出では健康リスクはみられない、と述べた。
