ギリシャのヤニス・バルファキス財務相は7月2日、オーストラリアのABCラジオに出演し、「ギリシャは既にお札を刷る輪転機を全て破壊しており、ドラクマ紙幣を刷る能力がない」と話した

バルファキス財務相は、ギリシャがEUに加入する前年の2000年に「将来のユーロ圏脱退の可能性を排除するため、当時のドラクマ紙幣の輪転機を処分する必要があった」と主張。「ギリシャは独自紙幣を刷る能力がない」と説明した。

ギリシャは7月5日に国民投票を実施することで、ユーロ圏を離脱するのではないかとの見方がある。ギリシャがユーロを離脱すると同国内では旧ドラクマ紙幣が使われるとみられており、すでに5月には世界最大の紙幣印刷会社であるイギリスのデ・ラ・ルーが、ドラクマ紙幣の印刷に向けて準備を整えていると報じられていた
