世界遺産への指定が勧告された長崎市の「軍艦島」。その姿を精密な3Dモデルで再現した動画が、YouTubeで公開された。
長崎大学大学院の「軍艦島プロジェクト」の研究チームが、長崎市の委託を受けて制作した。崩壊が進む軍艦島の建物の保存に向けて活用するのが目的だ。
ドローンを使った空撮を含む約2万8千枚の写真と、約145カ所でのレーザー計測を組み合わせることで完成したものだという。3Dプリンターを使い立体模型を出力することも可能だという。
軍艦島の正式名称は端島（はしま）。長崎港の南西約19キロにある無人島だ。明治時代から海底炭鉱の拠点として栄えて、鉄筋コンクリートの建物が密集する様が、海から見て軍艦に似ていることから「軍艦島」の名前で有名となった。1974年の炭鉱閉山で廃墟となったが、現在は島の一部のみ上陸が認められている。
