国連で行われる気候変動サミットを直前に控えた9月21日、ニューヨークで30万人以上の人々が世界的な気候変動の解決を求めるデモ行進に参加した。

国連で行われる気候変動サミットを直前に控えた9月21日、ニューヨークで30万人以上の人々が世界的な気候変動の解決を求めるデモ行進「ピープルズ・クライメイト・マーチ」に参加した。世界各国の首脳は、23日に国連気候変動サミットで環境活動に関して議論する。

イベント主催者の速報によると、今回行われた気候変動対策を求めるデモ行進は過去最大で、2013年にワシントンD.C.で行われた「フォワード・オン・クライメイト」(気候変動対策を前進させよう)集会よりも規模がはるかに上回るという。

気候変動に取り組む国連平和大使に任命された俳優のレオナルド・ディカプリオさん、気候変動防止活動を行う「350.org」設立者、『自然の終焉』などの著者であるビル・マッキベンさん、霊長類行動学者のジェーン・グドールさん、インドの哲学者で環境活動家のヴァンダナ・シヴァさんをはじめとした有名な環境保護主義者らが、上院議員のシェルドン・ホワイトハウス氏 (民主党、ロードアイランド州)、バーニー・サンダース氏 (無所属、バーモント州)、 チャールズ・シューマー氏 (民主党、ニューヨーク州)と並んでデモ行進をした。潘基文国連事務総長、アル・ゴア元副大統領も参加した。デモ行進の際には、550台以上のバスも人々を乗せて走った。

大統領顧問のジョン・ポデスタ氏は18日、「アメリカは気候変動対策をリードしていることを世界に示し、他国の首脳に積極的に取り組むよう呼びかける」ことを約束した、と述べた。最近の研究では、2013年に世界全体で大気中に排出された炭酸ガスが過去最大となったことが明らかになっている。主にアメリカ、中国、インドから排出されたものだ。中国とインドの首脳らは9月初め、23日のサミットには出席しないと表明し、代わりに中国の張高麗副首相とインドのプラカシ・ジャバデカール環境相が特使として派遣される。
