アメリカの宇宙開発企業「スペースX」の創設者で、電気自動車メーカー「テスラモーターズ」のCEOイーロン・マスク氏が夢見た超高速列車「ハイパーループ」が10年程度で実現するかもしれない。

ハイパーループ・トランスポーテーション・テクノロジーと呼ばれる新しいベンチャー企業が12月18日に76ページの報告書を発表し、未来の交通システムを建設する計画を提出した。これによって、ロサンゼルスとサンフランシスコ間が35分間で移動できることになる。この旅程はアムトラック(全米鉄道旅客公社)の電車だと12時間かかり、自家用車では6時間以上かかる。

ハイパーループ・トランスポーテーション内で新設されたクラウドファンディング会社「ジャンプスタートファンド」のなかで、今回のプロジェクトの予算について、70〜190億ドルという大きな幅がある試算を行っている。

ハイパーループCEOダーク・アールボーン氏はハフポストの取材に対し、試算に大きな幅をもたせたのは、今後10年の間で資材の価格やその他の出費が予想できないからだと述べた。

また、アールボーン氏は、ジャンプスタートファンドに対し富裕層からの資金援助や投資家からの出資の申し出が始まっていると述べた。

アールボーン氏は、10年でハイパーループを実現するプランは壮大な目標かもしれないと認めた。現在、アメリカで最も人口の多いカリフォルニア州の沿岸に建設される新しい公共交通機関「カリフォルニア高速鉄道」の強力なライバルになることから、議会の反対や法規制を考慮に入れていないからだ。

ロサンゼルスに拠点を置くドイツ生まれの起業家でもあるアールボーン氏は「私たちは積極的に情報を公開し、透明性を保っています」と述べた。

もしカリフォルニア州でハイパーループの建設が難しい場合、他の国で、という選択肢もありうる。

「私たちにとって最も大切なのは、ハイパーループを建設することです」。とアールボーン氏は述べた。「アメリカでの完成を望みますが、もし他の国での建設がより簡単なら、それでよしとします。建設することが目標です」。

もう一つの目標は安く利用できるという点だ。アールボーン氏はファーストクラスの座席のオプションも計画中だが、エコノミークラスシートのチケットは20〜30ドルと見積もっている。しかしアールボーン氏は理想として、運賃はポッド内の乗客をオーディエンスとして有効利用する広告料でまかない、無料にすることが望ましいという。

空の旅と同様、ハイパーループはファーストクラスとエコノミークラスの座席を用意する予定だ。

「30から40分の間、乗客がポッドの中にいるわけです。これはベンチャーの慈善団体ではなく商業会社ですから、ビジネスとして機能しなくてはなりません。ビジネスとして成立させるのはこれからです」。

同時に、最近公開されたハイパーループの募集広告に対して、応募が殺到している。技術者のチームは現在100名で、これからさらに増加する見通しだ。従業員はストックオプションを通じて高いサラリーを得ている。

「実を言うと、1時間あたりで10人から20人の応募を受け付けている状況なんです」とアールボーン氏は笑いながら言った。
