ロイヤルベビーの出産ニュースにわく英国だが、王室の近代化を象徴するウィリアム王子とキャサリン王妃のカップルは、育児も現代流を指向している。王室では従来、公務で忙しい両親に代わって乳母が育児やしつけを担うのが伝統だが、英メディアの報道によれば夫婦はできるだけ自分たちの手で普通の子育てをしたい意向だという。王子は英軍のヘリ操縦士だが、これから約2週間の「育児休暇」を取る方針。「おむつ交換の練習をしている」という報道もあり、「イクメン王子」として英王室の伝統に新たな1ページを加えるのか、子育て参加ぶりも注目される。

朝日新聞デジタルの報道によると、不慮の事故で没したウィリアム王子の母親、故ダイアナ元妃は、王子の最初の乳母がまるで母親のようにふるまうことが不満だったという。その血を受け継ぐウィリアム王子と、一般家庭に育ったキャサリン妃も、できるだけ自分たちや祖父母の手で、普通の育て方をしようとしているようだ。英BBCによると、2人は今年1月に家政婦募集の告知を出したが、乳母は募っていないという(07222013 朝日新聞デジタル「英王室の子育て「革命」 王子も育休、乳母は募集せず」)

出産時、病院ではキャサリン妃のそばにウィリアム王子が終始付き添い、出産後しばらくは夫妻と赤ちゃんだけの時間を過ごした。ウィリアム王子は「このうえなく幸せ(We could not be happier)」というコメントを発表した。

英大衆紙メール・オン・サンデーの世論調査によると、「王子夫妻は子どもと一緒に過ごせるよう、乳母を雇わずに育児をすべきだ」との回答が5割を超え、「そのためにキャサリン妃が公務を減らすべきだ」という声も6割近くに達していた。王室を見つめる社会の人々の目も変化しているようだ。
