しかし、この標語が全く違う意味で印字されてしまった。

フロリダ州ピネラス郡の保安官事務所は、アメリカン・フロア・マッツ社に500ドルを支払い、「In God We Trust」を印字した品を依頼したはずだった。驚くことに、代わりに納品されたものには、「In Dog We Trust」(我ら犬を信ず)と、人間にとっての親友を讃える文が刻まれてしまっていた(同時に注文したもう一つのラグは、正しく印刷されていた)。

この間違いは数カ月経過したあとでようやく発見され、ラグマットは人目につかないように撤去された。しかし、その存在は決して忘れられてはいなかった。

このラグマットが知られるようになったきっかけは、地元のABC系列のテレビ局「ABCアクションニュース」のアダム・ウィナー記者がこのタイプミスに初めて気付きツイートしたことがきっかけだった。

このツイート以来、世界中から連絡が絶えないとボブ・ガルティエリ保安官は「ABCアクションニュース」に語った。

「みんな心配しているのは『ああ、お願いだから捨てないでくれ』なんだよ」

その通りだ。オークションはちょうど100ドル(約1万1000円)で開始したが、入札はすでに18日の午後には5100ドル(約60万円)に達している。もちろん、その入札金は全て犬のシェルターを運営する地元の非営利団体「ケナイン・エステーツ社」に贈られることになる。

ケナイン・エステーツ社の創業者ジェイン・シドウェルさんはハフポストUS版に対し、「とても嬉しいです」と語った。 「資金がもっと必要なんです」。

現在、30匹の犬の世話をしているケナイン・エステーツ社には、まもなくさらに10匹に加わる。シドウェルさんにはケナイン社が選ばれた理由に心当たりがあった。ガルティエリ保安官が2014年に、ここから13歳の犬を1匹引き取っていたからだ。
