アメリカ・インディアナ州の「宗教の自由回復法」が3月27日、アメリカ全土に批判の嵐を引き起こした。法案に反対した人たちは、州内で仕事をするLGBT（レズビアン、ゲイ、バイセクシャル、トランスジェンダー）の人々の法的差別につながると警告していた。

インディアナポリスで男子バスケットボール大会ファイナル・フォー（Final four）を開催する予定の全米大学体育協会（NCAA）は26日の声明で、「この法律が学生アスリートと職員たちにどれだけの影響を及ぼすのか、非常に懸念している」と述べた。

27日までに、さまざまな著名人たちも議論に加わった。2014年に自身がゲイだとカミングアウトしたAppleのティム・クックCEOは、この法律に「深く失望している」と述べた。さらに2016年の大統領候補となることが濃厚な民主党最有力候補のヒラリー・クリントン前国務長官も、ツイッター上でこの法案を非難した。「このインディアナ州の新法が現在のアメリカで施行されるなんて悲しいことです。#LGBTを愛する人間だという理由で人を差別すべきではありません」とツイートしている。

2016年の大統領選で共和党の候補の一人になる見込みのペンス知事は27日、この法律は「宗教の自由が政府の行動によって攻撃されていると感じている」人々を公平に守るものだと釈明した。しかし28日夜、ペンス知事はこの法律の導入はLGBTの人々の差別を助長するものでないと「明確にする」サポートをすると語ったと、地元紙「インディ・スター」のティム・スワーレン記者は伝えた。しかし、法案は来週にも提出される見込みだとスワーレン記者は述べている。

「私は宗教の自由を支持し、この法律を支持します。今週、議会のリーダーたちと話し合い、この法律の意図を明確にする方法がないか検討します」とペンス知事はインディ・スターに語った。

7月に施行されるこの法律の支持者たちは、法律が一般的な宗教の自由を守るものではなく、LGBTの人々をターゲットとしたものと誤って認識されていると主張している。さらに、同様の法案が19の州で可決しており、各地で自動的にLGBTの人々の差別につながっているわけではないと言う。AP通信は、ミシシッピー州を例にあげ、「LGBTへの商品やサービスの提供拒否に法律が利用された目立った事例は起きていない」と報じている。

26日のラジオインタビューでペンス知事は「この法律は裁判所が政府の行動を審査する時の指針となり、最高基準となります。本質的には、政府が個人に宗教的信条を侵害する行動を強要する場合は、納得できる州の利益がなければならないのです」と述べた。

27日、アーカンソー州上院は同様の法案を可決し、国内最大の小売りチェーンの1つ、ウォルマート社からの非難を受けた。「この法律は個人を尊重するという軸となる基本理念に反するものであり、アーカンソー州についての誤ったメッセージを送るだけでなく、州内に存在するさまざまな状況についても誤ったメッセージを送るものだと思います」と同社の広報担当者は語った。
