アメリカのヘーゲル国防長官は6月14日、アラビア海に展開していた、空母ジョージ・H・W・ブッシュやミサイル巡洋艦、ミサイル駆逐艦などで構成する空母打撃群をイラクにより近いペルシャ湾に派遣したことを明らかにした。
国際テロ組織アルカイダの流れをくむイスラム教スンニ派の過激派組織「イラク・シリア・イスラム国」の台頭により、イラク情勢が緊迫している現状を踏まえ、オバマ大統領が、軍事行動が必要と判断した時に備えるためだとしている。朝日新聞デジタルなどが報じた。
オバマ大統領は近くイラクのマリキ政権への支援策を決断する方針。地上戦を想定した戦闘部隊の派遣はしない一方で、空爆を含めた幅広い選択肢を検討している。国防総省は、今回の指示はオバマ氏が軍事行動を決断したときに備えたものだと明らかにした。

NHKニュースによると、中東地域には3万5000人のアメリカ兵が展開しており、アメリカ政府内ではアルカイダ系の勢力に対し、無人機で空から攻撃することも含めて対応策の検討が進められている。一方で、オバマ大統領はイラクの指導者たちに対して次のような考えを示しているという。
オバマ大統領は、アメリカが軍事的な対応を取るにはイラクの指導者たちが宗派の違いを乗り越え、政治的な安定を取り戻そうと努力することが前提になるという考えを示しています。
