「バーキン」はこうして生まれた ジェーン・バーキンが名前を外すように求めたエルメスのバッグ

世界中の女性から愛されてきたエルメスの「バーキン」が生まれたきっかけは、バーキンさんがエルメスの社長と飛行機で偶然に隣同士になったことだった。

イギリス出身の女優で歌手の ジェーン・バーキンさんは、高級ファッションブランドの「エルメス」に対し、自分の名前が付いたクロコダイルのバッグ「バーキン」の名前を変えるように求めた。製造過程でワニたちが残酷な殺され方をしているという理由からだ。

きっかけになったのはアメリカの動物愛護団体「動物の倫理的扱いを求める人々の会(PETA)」の報告書だ。報告書によると、バッグの材料になるアリゲーターやクロコダイルは、何時間も苦しみもだえるながら殺されるという。

バーキンさんは「私の名前を冠したハンドバッグを作る過程で、ワニが残酷な方法で殺されています。改善措置が取られるまで、バーキン・クロコの名前を使わないよう、エルメスに要請しました」と声明で述べている。

バーキンは世界中の女性を夢中にさせてきたバッグだ。購入予約リストは2年待ちとされ、バッグの争奪戦は「おうちにバーキンを連れてって 幻のバッグをめぐる5年間の冒険」という本にもなっている。

2011年には、オークションでそれまでのハンドバッグの最高記録を更新する20万3000ドル(現在のレートで約2540万円)の値がついたが、2015年6月、競売大手クリスティーズが香港で開催したオークションで、ピンクのバーキンが約22万2000ドル(約2750万円)で落札され、あっさり記録を更新したばかりだ。

それほどまでに人気のあるバーキンが生まれたきっかけは、1981年にバーキンさんがパリからロンドンに向かう飛行機の中で、当時エルメスの社長だったジャン=ルイ・デュマ氏(2010年に死去)と偶然に隣同士になったことだという。

その時のことをバーキンさんはデイリー・テレグラフ紙に話している。それによると、持っていた籠バッグの中身をぶちまけてしまったバーキンさんを見たデュマ氏が、「ポケットがいくつか付いているバッグがいいですよ」と話しかけてきたという。

相手が誰であるか知らないまま、バーキンさんは「いつかエルメスが、ポケット付きのバッグを作ってくれたら買うんですけど」と答えた。するとデュマ氏は、「私はエルメスの者です。あなたのためにポケットを付けてあげましょう」と言い、そして2人でエールフランスの機内にあったエチケット袋の余白に、バーキンさんにとっての理想のバッグのデザインをスケッチしたという。

偶然隣同士の席になったことで生まれたバッグが、世界中で愛されるようになったのだ。しかし、今後「バーキン」の名前がつけられなくなれば大きなダメージは避けられないだろう。バーキンさんの声明を受けたエルメス社は、7月29日に同社はPETAの報告書載っている会社からはワニ皮を購入しておらず「提携企業に対して、クロコダイルを最高水準の倫理観に沿ってとり扱うよう求めている」と発表した。また、提携企業が実際にすべての規則やガイドラインに沿っているかを、今後確認していくとも述べている。

バーキンさんとの関係については「彼女のコメントは、わたしたちが長い間にわたって築いてきた友情と信頼にはまったく影響しません」と述べている。ただ、バッグの名前を変更するかにどうかについては回答していない。
