クシュナー氏の弁護士の主張では、この法律はホワイトハウスには適用されず、トランプ氏自身が大統領としてホワイトハウス職員を指名するのは「他のどんな法規にとらわれず」に実施することを認めた過去の判例にもとづいているという。

トランプ氏の長女イヴァンカさんとは2009年に結婚し、2人の間には2016年3月に第三子が生まれた。

クシュナー氏はユダヤ教のモダンオーソドックス(近代的正統派)の家で育てられた。クシュナー氏の両親は、ユダヤ教徒の女性と結婚することを望んでいた。雑誌『ニューヨーカー』によると、2008年にクシュナー氏は、イバンカさんと交際して3年経った頃、「宗教的な理由」で一度破局したという。

2人が交際を再開させたのは、「現代版シンデレラ」と呼ばれる中国人セレブのウェンディ・デンさんと当時の夫で「メディア王」と称されるルパート・マードック氏が招待した、ヨットでの週末旅行がきっかけだった。

イバンカさんはユダヤ教に改宗し、子供たちもユダヤ教信者として育てられている。

2016年2月、トランプ氏はTwitter上で反ユダヤ主義的なヒラリー・クリントン氏のポスター画像を公開して批判された。画像の背景には100ドル紙幣があしらわれ、六芒星(ユダヤ教のダビデの星)がクリントン氏の横に並んでいた。六芒星はユダヤ人やユダヤ教の象徴とされ、イスラエルの国旗にも描かれている。

後に、雑誌『オブザーバー』のブログで、ユダヤ教徒として育ったクシュナー氏は、祖父がホロコーストの生存者だと述べ、義理の父トランプ氏を「非常に愛情があって懐の広い人物だ」と擁護した。

また、ブログには「この人物の本心からのリアクションは、ユダヤ教徒とイスラエルに対し、本能的に友好的なものだ」とも書かれてあった。

「つい先週のことです...聴衆の一人が『シオニスト・イスラエル』に浪費することについて尋ねたのです。私の義理の父は、ひるまずに返答しました。『イスラエルは、アメリカにとって非常に重要な同盟国であり、私たちはイスラエルを100%保護するつもりです』。原稿も、側近も、テレプロンプターもない……本心から出た力強い言葉です」

家業である不動産会社のCEOと週刊紙『ニューヨーク・オブザーバー』の発行者職を離れるクシュナー氏は、ホワイトハウスの上級顧問に就くにあたって、給与を受け取らない。

公式サイトによると、クシュナー氏は、2万戸のアパート、1200万平方フィートの面積になるオフィス・スペースと工業地を所有または管理している。

政権移行チーム関係者の話では、クシュナー氏は5番街にある超高層ビル「666」の持ち株を、市場価格で母親が経営するトラストに売却することで処分するつもりだという。

すでに、政権移行チームの中の有力者だ。

大統領選以来、クシュナー氏は政権移行チームの主要な連絡役の1人となり、イスラエル関係者とコミュニケーションを取っている。クシュナー氏は1月8日、白人至上主義者の上級顧問スティーブ・バノン氏(写真左)と一緒に、イギリスのボリス・ジョンソン外相と会談した。

クシュナー氏とバノン氏はまた、イスラエルに関連する問題についても密接に協力している。アメリカ大使館をエルサレムに移動させる協議も進めており、中東の緊張を高めかねない動きだ。

クシュナー氏は、ヘンリー・キッシンジャー元国務長官、ポール・ライアン下院議長、ルパート・マードック氏を含む多数の大物たちとの連絡役を果たしてきた。

クシュナー氏はまた、議会の首脳と会談を行い、閣僚候補者の面談に力を貸した。

ニュージャージー州知事クリス・クリスティー氏は、トランプ氏の副大統領候補として報じられたが、クシュナー氏は、インディアナ州知事マイク・ペンス氏を推薦した。

クリスティー氏は政権移行チームの責任者に指名されたが、結局チームから外れ、ペンス氏に交代した。クリスティー氏が政権移行チームから突然離脱したのは、クシュナー氏との不和が原因だとされている。

2004年に、クシュナー氏の父親チャールズ・クシュナー氏は、当時ニュージャージー州の連邦検事だったクリスティー氏に脱税、証人買収、違法政治献金の罪で起訴され、有罪となって服役した。
