影の中でも木星の衛星が放つ微光発見

木星の周りを回る大きな衛星が、木星の影に入り太陽光に直接照らされていない「食」の状態にもかかわらず、ごくわずかに輝いていることを研究チームが発見した。

木星の周りを回る大きな衛星が、木星の影に入り太陽光に直接照らされていない「食」の状態にもかかわらず、ごくわずかに輝いていることを、東北大学の津村耕司(つむら こうじ)助教とJAXA宇宙科学研究所、国立天文台などの研究チームが発見した。発光は通常の100万分の1程度だが、米ハワイ島・マウナケア山頂のすばる望遠鏡とハッブル宇宙望遠鏡による観測で、このかすかな発光を捉えた。

今回観測したのは、ガリレオが1610年に木星の周りに望遠鏡で見つけた4大衛星。ガリレオ衛星と呼ばれ、通常は5等星か6等星程度の輝きがある。月が地球の影に隠れる月食のように、木星の衛星も木星の影に隠れて暗くなる「衛星食」が毎週1回程度と頻繁に起きる。そのときの衛星の光を詳しく観測した。木星の大気上層を探る新しい手がかりとして注目される。7月10日発行の米天体物理学誌アストロフィジカルジャーナルに発表する。

研究チームは、遠方の宇宙を観測するために、ガリレオ衛星のうち、火山活動があるイオを除く、エウロパ、ガニメデ、カリストの「衛星食」中の光を観測した。その結果、木星に近いエウロパは食の時に真っ暗だったが、ガニメデとカリストは食で木星の影に入っている時にも、通常の100万分の1程度のかすかな光を放っていた。すばる望遠鏡とハッブル宇宙通望遠鏡でガニメデを計3回、カリストを1回観測して、微光を確かめた。津村耕司さんは「予想外の偶然の発見で、驚いた」と話す。

かすかに光る詳しい原因は解明されていないが、研究チームは「木星の上層大気に存在する『もや』で散乱された太陽光がガリレオ衛星を間接的に照らしているのではないか。エウロパは木星からの距離が近すぎるため、散乱した光が届かない」とみている。これは、月が地球の影に完全に隠れてしまう皆既月食の時にも月が赤く光るのとやや似た現象といえる。

研究チーム代表の津村耕司さんは「今後この現象を継続的に調べれば、木星の大気にある『もや』の性質に迫れる。木星の大気のしま模様はこの『もや』からできていると考えられており、今回の観測で、これまで観測が難しかった『もえ』が見えてきた。その意義は大きい。また、近年数多く発見されている太陽系外惑星の大気についても、新たな知見が得られるだろう」と惑星大気研究の展開に期待している。

NASA\'s Voyager probes -- launched over 30 years ago -- found huge magnetic \"bubbles\" at the edge of the solar system.\r\n\r\n\"The sun\'s magnetic field extends all the way to the edge of the solar system,\" astronomer Merav Opher of Boston University said in a NASA statement. \"Because the sun spins, its magnetic field becomes twisted and wrinkled, a bit like a ballerina\'s skirt.
