俳優の渡辺謙（55）が「王様と私」で、アメリカ演劇界最高の栄誉とされるトニー賞のミュージカル主演男優賞の受賞を逃した。日本人俳優としては初の快挙は果たせなかった。産経ニュースが報じた。
授賞式は6月7日、ニューヨークのラジオシティ・ミュージックホールで開かれた。レッドカーペットには、妻で女優の南果歩（51）と共に登場。授賞式では「王様と私」のヒロイン、ケリー・オハラと「Shall We Dance?」のパフォーマンスを披露した。
朝日新聞デジタルによると、「王様と私」は1860年ごろのバンコクを舞台にシャム国王と、その子供たちの教師として招かれたイギリス人女性の関係を描いたミュージカル。渡辺謙が王様役で主演し、16年ぶりにリバイバル公演。7月中旬までニューヨークで上演している。
「王様と私」は、ミュージカル部門の再演作品に与えられるリバイバル作品賞などを受賞。主演男優賞、主演女優賞、リバイバル作品賞など計9つの賞にノミネートされ、王妃役を演じたルーシー・アン・マイルズさんが助演女優賞を受賞。主演男優賞の期待がかかった渡辺謙は、受賞に至らなかった。
