ガーナ中部ブロング=アハフォ州にあるキンタンポの滝で3月19日、滝壺で泳いでいた地元ウェンチ・メソジスト高校の高校生たちの上に大木が根こそぎ倒れ、少なくとも18人が死亡した。

首都アクラの北400キロメートルにあるキンタンポの滝は人気の観光スポットして知られ、この日は週末の日帰り旅行者で賑わっていた。彼らの多くは学生だった。事故当日、現場は暴風雨が接近しており、木が根こそぎ倒れたとみられる。

地元の警察署長デスモンド・オウス・ボームポン氏はロイター通信に、さらに20人が病院で手当てを受けていると語った。また、BBCによると22人が負傷した。

放送局によると、レスキュー隊はチェーンソーを使い、倒れた木を切り下敷きになった人を救ったという。

ナナ・アクフォ=アド大統領は犠牲者の遺族に遺憾の意を伝えるツイートをした。

目撃者は地元紙「スター・ニュース」に、被害者の大半がウェンチ高校の生徒だが、観光客もケガをしているという。

犠牲者のうち何人がウェンチ高校の生徒かどうかは不明だが、少なくとも5人の生徒が死亡したという情報もある。

ニュースメディア「233livenews.com」によると、ガーナのエネルギー天然資源大学の学生数人も事故に巻き込まれたとみられる。
