元阪神で大リーグ・レンジャーズを退団した藤川球児投手が6月8日、独立リーグの高知ファイティングドッグスへの入団会見を開いた。NHKニュースによると、藤川投手は1試合ごとに報酬なしの契約を結び、登板した試合のチケットの売り上げの1割を、児童養護施設に寄付するという。
藤川投手は高知市の出身。地元でプレーするのは高知商業高校のとき以来、17年ぶりとなる。8日の入団会見では、「地元の子どもたちに夢を見せたい」と話していた。
「新しい人生のスタートとして、最高の決断ができたと思っている。大リーグでプレーしていたときにチームメートが自分の地元を大事にする姿を見ていましたし、高知の野球人口が減っているという話も聞いていたので、少しでも地元に貢献したい。バリバリとプレーできるときに地元の子どもたちに夢を見せたい」

藤川投手は1980年生まれの34歳。2000年に入団した阪神で抑えとして活躍し、通算220セーブを挙げた。2012年オフに大リーグのカブスに移籍。しかし2013年に右肘を手術して、レンジャーズ入りした2015年は、右脚の故障で出遅れた。登板2試合で自由契約となり、古巣の阪神から獲得の申し入れがあったが、これを断って独立リーグ入りした。
高知での背番号は11番。8月に始まるリーグ戦後期に備え、6月20日に高知市内で行われる練習試合に先発する予定だ。時事ドットコムによると、藤川投手は入団会見で「今後また必要としてくれる球団があれば、そこで（投げる）という可能性はある」と話した。
