女性が教育を受ける権利を訴えたことで武装勢力に頭を撃たれたパキスタンのマララ・ユスフザイさん(17)が8月18日、アメリカ・ニューヨークで開催された世界の貧困問題解消を目指す国連のイベントに出席し、教育の重要性と「声を上げることの大切さ」を訴えた。

マララさんは、国連の潘基文事務総長らとのトークセッションに出演。最近訪問したトリニダード・トバゴとナイジェリアの2国を比較。石油やガスで得た利益を教育に使っているトリニダード・トバゴに対し、より収益を得ているナイジェリアでは教育を受けられる子供が少ないことを批判した。

「トリニダード・トバゴの状況は、希望を与えてくれます。この国では、初等教育も無料だし、中等教育も無料。高等教育も無料。さらに、あなたが何かをマスターしたい場合には、その授業料の半分を政府が肩代わりしているのです。

トリニダード・トバゴはそこまで裕福な国ではありませんが、益々発展しています。というのも、石油や天然ガスなどで得た収入が賄賂などに使われるわけではなく、教育に使っているからです。

一方、ナイジェリアは石油と天然ガスが大変豊富な国ですが、1050万人もの子供が学校に通っていない状況があります」

マララさんはナイジェリアで4月に発生した、武装集団「ボコ・ハラム」が人身売買のマーケットで販売するために女子生徒200人以上を誘拐した問題にも言及。誘拐された子供たちのケアが行われていないことにも心を痛めた。

「誘拐された子供たちの両親たちに会い、話を聞きました。また、誘拐されたあと逃げ出した子供たちにも話を聞きました。驚いたことに彼女たちは、学校にも行けていないし、彼女たちが負った心の傷を癒やす援助も全くありませんでした。

Twitterなどでは、ボコ・ハラムの問題が頻繁に提示されていますが、本当の意味で彼女たちを救っている人はいなかったのです」

ナイジェリア当局はボコ・ハラムによる女子生徒の拉致を事前に察知していたにもかかわらず適切な対応を講じなかったとされており、大統領のグッドラック・ジョナサン氏も、事件後も救出活動の初動で出遅れたうえ、思いやりと迅速さの両方が欠けていると非難された。

マララさんは6月にボコ・ハラムの被害者らと面会したあと、ジョナサン氏に直談判。親たちが絶望しきっている状態を伝え、「大統領の助けが必要だ」として被害者の親たちに面会することなどを求めた。

このようなアクションやパキスタンでの自身の活動を例に挙げ、マララさんは「あなたが今直面している、まさに苦しんでいる問題を発信し続けることが大切なんです」と、イベントに参加した500人を超える若者らにアクションを起こすこと呼びかける。声を上げて訴えたことで、自身の活動についても世界中から助けが得られたと紹介した。

しかし、イベントの参加者からは、自分のちっぽけな声で状況が変わるのかという不安の声も上がった。マララさんはそんな若者たちを勇気づけるように、次のように述べた。

「私たちは自分の声の力を信じなければいけません。自分の発言が本当に、状況を変化させることができるのだと」
