武装グループはこの日の早朝、ホテルに車で乗り付けた。ABCニュースは、犯人らは発砲の際に、「アッラーは偉大なり」と叫んだと伝えている。現地の経営者の一人はアルジャジーラの電話インタビューで「約10人の銃を持った連中たちがやってきて、ホテルの前で警備員に向けて発砲した」と述べた。
現在は、マリ軍が国連軍とともにホテルの周りを取り囲んでおり、建物内では銃撃戦が続いている。
マリは1960年に独立するまでフランスの植民地だった。北部はアルカイダなどの過激派組織によって占拠されたため、フランスが2013年1月に軍事介入している。パリの同時多発テロとの関連性は、現在のところ不明。
