南アフリカ国民が、国民的英雄へ最後のお別れを告げる時が来た。12月15日、5日に亡くなったネルソン・マンデラ元大統領(享年95)の国葬が行われた。

南アフリカでは10日間の国喪の後、マンデラ元大統領の遺体は生前の希望通り、彼が幼少時代に過ごした南アフリカ南西部のクヌで、両親と3人の子供たちとともに埋葬された。

11~13日、マンデラ元大統領の遺体が首都プレトリアで一般公開された際にはおよそ10万人が訪れて別れを告げた。遺体は棺が半分開けられた状態で公開されていた。

ヨハネスブルグ近郊のソウェト地区にあるFNBスタジアムで行われた10日の追悼式では、およそ100カ国の政府首脳を含む6万人が参列した。一方、今回のクヌでの葬儀は、近親者が中心となって行われた。

「一人の男が、自分の国民、自分の国に対してすべき義務を果たした時、その男は安らかに眠れる。私は自分でこの義務を果たせたと思う」反アパルトヘイト闘争の英雄が1996年に語った言葉である。

「タタンクール(祖父)はとてもお茶目な人で、とても素晴らしい語り部でした。おじいさんは自分でも笑えるような話を好んで聞かせてくれました。しかし、とても厳格な祖父でもありました。規律を好み、自立することを教えてくれたのです」と、孫のナンディ・マンデラさんは頌徳(徳を称えること)の辞を述べた。

国喪の様子はテレビで生中継され、国中に設置された巨大スクリーンで放送された。葬儀はコサ族のしきたりに則って行われ、マンデラ家が所有している巨大テントの中で海外の要人を含む4500人が参列した。

南アフリカのジェイコブ・ズマ大統領は弔辞で次のように述べた。

「マンデラは良識の泉であり、精神的支柱であり、希望の光だった」

「我々が望んで具現化したあらゆるものに、そして我々が生きてきた困難な時代に指導者として我々の期待に応えてくれたことに感謝を捧げる。我々はあなたの類稀なる人生から学び続けていく」

「我々はマンデラの遺産を受け継いでいく。あなたの自由への長い道は物理的な意味では終わった。しかし我々自身の旅は続く。我々はあなたが仕えてきた国を築き続けなければならない」
