■ニューヨークのファンへ一足早くお披露目
ヤンキース入団が決まった田中将大投手（25）の投球が、一足早くニューヨークのファンに"お披露目"されることになった。ヤンキース傘下のケーブル局YESネットワークが、24勝無敗の圧倒的な成績を残した昨年の田中の登板試合のうちの1試合を現地時間10日に放映すると発表した。米紙ニューヨーク・ポストなどが大きく取り上げ、話題となっている。
放映されるのは、昨年6月9日の巨人戦（東京ドーム）。この試合で田中はセ・リーグ王者相手を7回3安打無失点と圧倒し、5月22日の本拠地での対戦に続いて交流戦で2連勝を飾った。この時点で田中は開幕8連勝を達成。ピッチングの内容がいいことから選ばれたようだ。
YESの公式HPには解説者の元捕手ジョン・フラハティー氏のコメントが掲載されており、田中の投球を高く評価している。
「彼の速球は聞いていたよりも少し動いて見える。右打者にとっては少し沈むように見えるだろう。シンカーと呼ぶほど（の変化）ではないが、打者を警戒させるには十分だ。このゲームではスライダーとカットボールを多く投げているね」
やはり、百聞は一見にしかずと言ったところか。また、こうもコメント。
「彼はとても自信を持っているように見えるね。そして、カウントが悪くなると、ストライクを投げている。つまり、キャッチャーはどんなときでも彼にややスピードを落としたボールを要求でき、それがストライクになると自信を持っているようだ」
また、同じくYESで解説を務める元強打者のケン・シングルトン氏とメジャー通算162勝のアル・ライターのコメントも掲載されている。シングルトン氏は田中のコントロールに強い印象を受けたとし、ライターは25歳の右腕ついて「アメリカの野球に慣れることが出来れば、先発ローテーションの中心になれる」と話している。
昨年のものとはいえ、ヤンキース戦の全試合を中継しているYESが日本プロ野球の試合を放映するのは極めて異例と言える。それだけ、ニューヨーク市民の田中への関心は高い。未来のエースの投球を一刻でも早く見ておきたいというのが望みだろう。投球は完璧に近い内容だけに、ファンの心をがっちりと掴み、完璧な"デビュー"となることは間違いない。
