サウジアラビアのメッカで9月11日、世界最大のモスク「マスジド・ハラーム」に向かってクレーンが倒れる事故が発生した。BBCによると、少なくとも107人が死亡、230人が負傷したという。
この日、現地は悪天候に見まわれており、強い雨風によって木々が倒されるなどの被害が出ていた。
建設作業用に置かれていたクレーンは、マスジド・ハラームを直撃。天井を突き破るなどの動画が、YouTubeに投稿された。この日は恒例の金曜礼拝が行われており、居合わせた信者に被害が出た。
マスジド・ハラームにはイスラム教徒にとって最も神聖なカーバ神殿がある。イスラム教の礼拝は同神殿に向かって行われるため、このモスクには世界で唯一、メッカの方向を示すミフラーブ（壁龕(へきがん)）が設けられていない。
メッカには9月21日に始まる大巡礼「ハッジ」のため、世界各地から多数のイスラム教徒が訪れていた。
