旧姓メラニア・クラウスさんは1970年、スロベニアで生まれた。16歳でモデルを始め、18歳の時にイタリアのモデルエージェンシーと契約。スロベニアの大学でデザインと建築を学んだ後は、パリやミラノでモデルとして活躍し、1996年には拠点をニューヨークに移した。ヴォーグやELLE、GQなどの表紙を飾り、アフラックなどのテレビCMにも登場した。
1998年にトランプ氏とパーティーで知り合い、2005年1月に結婚。3番目の妻となった。2人の結婚式には、クリントン夫妻も出席している。
この年、バロン君を出産し、1児の母となった。
外国出身のファーストレディは190年ぶりで、6代大統領ジョン・クインシー・アダムズの妻でイギリス出身のルイーザ・アダムスさんに次いで2人目となる。
