アフリカ南部ジンバブエで長期独裁を敷くロバート・ムガベ大統領は2月21日、93歳の誕生日を迎えた。ムガベ氏は数百万人のジンバブエ国民が食糧難や栄養不良に苦しむ中、3月4日に誕生日を祝う盛大なパーティーを開催する。

地元メディアは、この豪華な式典には少なくとも10万人が出席すると伝えているが、開催地のブラワヨ市は「アフリカ最悪の都市」に選ばれている。

BBCによると、この祝典は「アフリカ最大のパーティー」になるという。参加者には約150頭分の牛が振る舞われ、大量のケーキが用意されている。ブラワヨ市の一部は休校となる。このパーティーの費用は約100万ドル(約1億1500万円)と推定されている。

2016年には、深刻な干ばつで郊外人口の半数にあたる500万人が厳しい食糧難に陥り、ムガベ大統領は国家非常事態宣言を発動した。国連は、ジンバブエはこの15年で最悪の栄養不良に直面したと声明を出した。

与党のジンバブエ・アフリカ民族同盟愛国戦線(ZANU-PF)は、複数の学校や貧しい家庭に対し、強制的にムガベ大統領のパーティへの寄付を求めたという。

ZANU-PF所属のネヴェル・カニエ議員は2月上旬、農民たちが「パーティに家畜一頭を必ず寄付すること。そうしない場合は、大統領が今まで行ってきたことに感謝の気持ちがないとみなされる」という通知を受けたと話した。

さらに国民は、この祝賀行事が行われる場所が、1980年代初頭ムガベ大統領に忠実な軍に殺害された数千人が眠る墓地の近くで行われることに怒りをあらわにしている。

祝賀行事中の反ムガベの抗議デモを阻止するため、ブラワヨ市では治安が強化されている。
