1993年のサッカーのJリーグ開幕から参戦する10クラブ「オリジナル10」の一つ、名古屋グランパスが11月3日、初めてJ2に降格することが決まった。同日にパロマ瑞穂スタジアム（名古屋）で行われたJ1第2ステージ最終節で、名古屋が湘南ベルマーレに1―3で敗れて年間16位となったため。共同通信などが報じた。
名古屋は2010年に、現役時代にユーゴスラビア代表として活躍したドラガン・ストイコビッチ監督（51）の下で、J1初制覇を果たした。今季はクラブワーストの18戦連続未勝利など低迷。8月には今季から指揮を執っていた小倉隆史監督（43）を事実上解任する事態に陥っていた。

オリジナル10の中で、これまで降格がないのは名古屋、鹿島、横浜マだけだった。既に17位の湘南と18位の福岡のJ2降格が決まっている。
ホームの会場はブーイングや拍手が交錯するなど異様な雰囲気となった。主将のMF田口泰士は試合後のセレモニーで「このような結果になり、申し訳ありませんでした。必ずこの経験を生かし、精進していきたい」と謝った。
昨季限りで退団して母国ブラジルに戻っていた元日本代表DF田中マルクス闘莉王は8月末、身重の新婚妻を置いて名古屋に電撃復帰した。闘莉王は試合後、「この試合に人生を懸けてきた。まだ自分の中で整理がつかない」と報道陣に語った。
