任天堂がスーパーマリオをアニメ映画化か マリナーズ株を660億円で売却

ゲーム機大手の任天堂は8月22日、過半数を保有していたアメリカ大リーグ「マリナーズ」運営会社の株式について、10%の保有分を残して6億6100万ドル(約660億円)で地元の既存出資者に売却したと発表した。

スーパーマリオの等身大フィギュア

京都新聞は、任天堂は売却益を「スーパーマリオのアニメ映画といった映像事業や、新型ゲーム機の開発などに振り向けるとみられる」と報じている。

任天堂は、映画事業に参入するため、世界の複数の制作会社と提携交渉を進めている。制作会社からキャラクター使用料を取る形ではなく、単体で成り立つビジネスにしていく方針だ。君島達己社長が「できるだけ自分たちでやっていきたい」と述べており、朝日新聞は「スーパーマリオ」や「ゼルダの伝説」など、世界で人気の高いゲームのキャラクターが登場する3Dアニメ映画が有力だと報じていた。

21日のリオ五輪閉会式でも、2020年東京五輪をPRするセレモニーの中で、スーパーマリオの格好をした安倍晋三首相が登場する演出があった

■元社長が自費で購入したマリナーズ

西海岸のシアトルに本拠地を置くマリナーズは、イチローや佐々木主浩が在籍したことで、日本でも知名度が高い。現在は岩隈久志選手と青木宣親選手が所属している

マリナーズを任天堂が買収したのは、もともとシアトル郊外に任天堂アメリカ法人の本社があったことがきっかけだった。球団の身売りを心配したシアトルの有力者たちが、任天堂に支援を求めたことで、1992年に当時の山内溥(ひろし)社長が自費で所有権を買い、筆頭オーナーになった。

山内氏は2005年に所有権を、アメリカ法人に譲渡し、2013年に85歳で死去した。山内氏は将来は球団の所有権を地元の有力者に譲る意向を任天堂に伝えていたという。
