任期終了まで2年を切ったアメリカのバラク・オバマ大統領が11月9日、Facebookページを開設した。以前から存在するオバマ氏のFacebookページ「バラク・オバマ」は政治団体が運営していたが、新しいアカウントはオバマ大統領だけがメッセージを投稿できる。
ホワイト・ハウス側は、新しいFacebookページの開設について「私たちの国が直面するもっとも重要な問題について、アメリカの人々と会話する場所」と説明。オバマ大統領も、「あなた方が直接、私の言葉を聞ける場所であり、また、あなた自身のストーリーをシェアする場所だ」と投稿している。
このアカウント開設は、オバマ大統領が任期を終え、一般市民となったあともソーシャルメディアで影響を持つための準備だと指摘する声もある。アメリカのオンラインメディア「スレート」のリリー・ヘイ・ニューマン氏は、新しいFacebookページのURLに、オバマ大統領が5月に開設したTwitterアカウントにも使われている「POTUS」が使われていることを挙げ、次のように指摘している。
「POTUS」ブランドを他の人が使えないようにする戦略であることは明らかだ。ローマ法王のTwitterアカウント「@Pontifex」は代々引き継がれるが、オバマ氏はそんなに寛容ではないだろう。
