ワシントン -- アメリカのバラク・オバマ大統領は3月20日、ハフポストUS版の単独インタビューで、大統領が司法長官に指名したロレッタ・リンチ氏の承認を拒否しているとして、共和党上院議員を厳しく非難した。その中で、分裂した議会に対する取引材料として、ロレッタ・リンチ氏を「人質」として抱えていることは許されないとした。

リンチ氏はビル・クリントン元大統領政権とオバマ政権時にニューヨーク東部地区連邦検事を務めている。2014年11月8日、オバマ大統領はエリック・ホルダー司法長官の後任として、ロレッタ・リンチ検事を指名していた。承認されれば、史上初のアフリカ系アメリカ人女性の司法長官となる。

「司法長官候補を、関係のない理由で人質に取ることはできません」と、オバマ大統領はインタビューで、ハフポストUS版のサム・ステイン記者に述べた。「司法省は我が国の最高の法執行機関です。彼女にその資格が十分にあることは誰も否定することはできません。我々は前に進み、彼女を着任させる必要があるのです」。

リンチ氏の指名は130日以上長引く問題となっている。今週、共和党のミッチ・マコーネル上院院内総務はオバマ政権への妨害工作として、議会が人身売買に関する法案を可決するまではリンチ氏への同意は得られないと警告した。民主党はその法案に含まれている中絶反対の条文に反対している。

ダービン議員は「ロレッタ・リンチ氏は司法長官に指名された初のアフリカ系アメリカ人女性だ。しかし上院では、彼女はバスの後方で座っているよう求められている〔訳注・1955年、アフリカ系アメリカ人女性のローザ・パークスさんが、市営バスでアフリカ系アメリカ人専用席への移動を拒否して逮捕された事件を指す〕」と述べた。「それは不公平である。それは正義ではない。それはアメリカ上院議会の礼節や尊厳にかかわる問題である」。

しかし、オバマ大統領は共和党の意図について確信を持っていないようだ。

「それについては分かりません」と、大統領はリンチ氏の承認の遅れに人種が関係している可能性があることについて言及を避けた。その代わり、オバマ大統領は「上院議会の機能不全」を指摘した。「候補者を容認しない、一部の共和党議員の頑なな姿勢に問題がある。そういうことなのです」。
