安全保障関連法案を審議する衆院平和安全法制特別委員会は5月29日、岸田文雄外相の答弁を不服として民主、維新、共産の3党の委員が退席したため、質疑が中断した。与党は審議再開を申し入れたが野党は応じず、特別委は予定していた残りの質疑を行わないまま散会した。時事ドットコムなどが報じた。
午前の質疑で民主党の後藤祐一氏は、１９９８年の衆院予算委員会で当時の外務省局長が、日本経済に大きな影響があっても軍事的な波及がない中東での紛争は「周辺事態に該当しない」と答弁したことを取り上げ、「現在もこの答弁は維持されているか」とただした。
これに対し、外相は「当時は周辺事態法案が提出される前だった。国会審議を受けて示した政府見解は現在も維持されている」などと明言を避けた。後藤氏は同じ質問を繰り返したが、明確な答弁がないため、これ以上質問できないとして民主党が退席。維新、共産両党も同調した。

特別委で審議中の重要影響事態法案は、「周辺事態」という事実上の地理的制約を取り除き、アメリカ軍やそれ以外の他国軍を地球規模で後方支援できるよう、周辺事態法の内容を変更するもの。これについて民主党は、1998年の局長答弁が現在も有効なら、重要影響事態などの適用対象も制限される可能性があるとみている。
この日の紛糾は、安倍晋三首相が前日28日に民主党の辻元清美議員に対して発したヤジに野党が強く反発したのに続く衝突となり、与野党の対決色が一段と強まった。
