黒人奴隷問題を描き、世界的に社会現象を起こした1977年のアメリカのテレビドラマ「ルーツ/ROOTS」のオリジナル放送開始から40年、新たに制作された「ルーツ」の新シリーズが、歴史の”闇”に再びスポットライトを当てている。

「ルーツ」は、アフリカ系アメリカ人作家のアレックス・ヘイリーの小説が原作。1977年にABCテレビでドラマが制作され、西アフリカのガンビアから連れてこられた黒人少年クンタ・キンテから3世代にわたって黒人奴隷がアメリカの白人社会で苦難に満ちた生活を送った様子が描かれている。

小説はピュリッツァー賞を受賞して記録的なベストセラーになり、ドラマの平均視聴率は45%を記録。タイトルの「ルーツ」や「クンタ・キンテ」といった言葉が流行語となるなど、世界的な反響を巻き起こした。

1977年放送のオリジナル作に出演したベン・ベリーン(69)によると、今回制作された新シリーズは奴隷や過去に関する重要なストーリーを伝えるだけではない。私たちに極めて重要な問いを投げかけるチャンスになるという。

ベリーンはオプラ・ウィンフリーの番組「Oprah: Where Are They Now(原題)」で、主人公クンタ・キンテの名前が付けられた島を彼が訪ねた時のことを語った。

「私はガンビアのジュフレを訪れました。アレックス・ヘイリーがクンタ・キンテ一家とそのルーツを見つけた場所です。そのジュフレの対岸に、小さな島があるんです」

ガンビア沖にあるその島はかつてジェームズ島として知られていた。その島名は2011年にクンタ・キンテ島へと改名された。西アフリカの奴隷貿易時代に、その島で起こった残虐行為についてベリーンは語った。

ベリーンがこの島を訪れた時、胸がいっぱいになったという。

「私はこの小部屋の中に立って赤ん坊のように泣きじゃくりました」と彼は語った。「ここが私の『嘆きの壁』なんです」

彼のこの胸を打つ体験が、「ルーツ」や奴隷貿易について人々が再び語る機会をもつよう強く勧める理由の一つだ。
