米太平洋空軍のカーライル司令官は7月29日、ワシントン市内で会見し新型輸送機「オスプレイ」の日本での配備先について、沖縄県の嘉手納基地と並び、東京都の横田基地も有力な候補と述べた。配備先は2014年初めまでに決まる見通しだという。
時事通信によると、司令官は「横田も議論されている」と語った上で、日米両政府が協議中だと明言した。さらに「横田には恐らく相当の可能性がある」との見解を示した。
一方で、日本の菅義偉官房長官は30日午前の記者会見で、「日米で協議中」とするカーライル司令官の発言を否定している。朝日新聞デジタルでは、次のように発言を伝えている。
「米側から我が国に配備するという通報はなく、政府として承知はしていない。実現性はないと思っている」
