当局によると、手投げ弾などで武装した6人以上が旧ターミナルを攻撃した。複数の爆発が起き、駆け付けた空港警備隊との間で銃撃戦が展開された。

旧ターミナルは、主にイスラム教の聖地メッカに向かう巡礼者が多い時期だけ使われ、普段は利用されていない。このため、警備が手薄だったという。

カラチの日本総領事館によると、日本人が事件に巻き込まれたとの情報は入っていないという。

アメリカCNNによると、戦闘は終わっており、当局が周辺の安全を確保しているという。

警察関係者によれば、武装グループは手投げ弾を持って空港の3つの入り口から侵入した。同空港はパキスタン国内で規模が最も大きく、利用客も多い。現場は旅客機の発着場所から約1キロ離れた貨物エリアで、要人用の特別施設もある。(中略)

同空港の発着便はすべてキャンセルされた。一部の乗客は空港内のラウンジに足止めされているという。

カラチは武装勢力に何度か襲われており、過去数カ月間に治安部隊や市民数十人が死亡している。アメリカのウォールストリート・ジャーナルは次の通り伝えている。

同市の多くの地区は反政府勢力タリバン(パキスタン・タリバン運動=TTP)が実質的に支配している。タリバンと政府との1カ月間の停戦協定は、暫定和平交渉が行き詰まったあと、4月に期限切れとなった。タリバンは国際テロ組織アルカイダと密接な協力関係にある。

空港襲撃とは別に、8日にはパキスタン西部のバルチスタン州タフタンでも武装勢力による攻撃があり、イスラム少数派シーア派の巡礼者少なくとも23人が死亡した。同州のサルファラズ・ブグチ内相によれば、このほかに7人が負傷し、武装勢力の4人も死亡した。武装勢力の中には少なくとも3人の自爆者もいた。同勢力は巡礼者たちが泊まっている二つのホテルを襲撃したという。タリバンやその系列の武装勢力はしばしばシーア派を襲撃している。

■パキスタン最大の商業都市カラチ

カラチは人口約2000万人余りで、パキスタン最大の都市。北部の首都イスラマバードは政治の中心地であるのに対し、カラチは国内最大の港があり、経済の中心地になっている。

中心部から17キロほど東にあるカラチ国際空港は、現在、日本からの直行便はありませんが、中東のドバイやタイのバンコクを結ぶ便が就航しています。

日本総領事館によりますと、現在、カラチに進出している日本企業は、自動車関連を中心に19社あるということです。
