突然ですが皆さん、パプアニューギニアを題材にしたマンガをご存知ですか?

パプアニューギニアとマンガ、というキーワードから連想されるのは、まずは水木しげる先生でしょう。南方戦線に赴きニューブリテン島ココポで、彼が愛を込めて「土人」と呼んだ、トーライ族との心温まる交流はもはや語り草。イラストから構成される「水木しげるのラバウル戦記」に、当時の様子が詳しく書かれています。

しかし、今日皆さんにご紹介したいマンガは、水木先生のものではありません。もっとドラマチックに、ファンタジスティックに、SF的に、パプアニューギニアを描ききったSF劇画大作が過去にありました。

その名も・・・「マッドメン」。月刊少年チャンピオンに1970年代から80年代にかけ不定期連載された作品です。原作者は諸星大二郎。マンガ好きなら名前を聞いただけでグッとくる、日本のマンガ界を代表する巨匠のひとりです。代表作は「妖怪ハンター」「西遊妖猿伝」などで、2000年に手塚治虫文化賞マンガ大賞を受賞しました。

その手法は、古史古伝にSF的エッセンスを加え、日常の価値観や世界観を逆転させるような、大胆かつ重厚なもの。ストーリーの完成度の高さ、そして重い読後感、不条理めいたユーモアなどは、レベルの高いマンガ通から愛され、ジャンルを超えた著名人の創作活動にも大きな影響を与えました。

「マッドメン」で諸星氏が描くのは近代化により失われてゆく神話や伝統を、パプアニューギニアを舞台に、現地の神話と日本神話が絡み合いながら展開してゆくという、実に壮大なもの。パプアニューギニアへの考察も深く、作品を通して、文化人類学、民族学的要素も踏まえた作品となっています。

同じ太平洋の島国であるパプアニューギニアと日本。そこには同じ流れを持つ文化があるのでは? という着想、そして日本の縄文文化と、現地に残るプリミティブな文化が重なり合ってゆくとき・・・と、非常に独創的ながら、魅力的なストーリーが展開されてゆきます。そして、波子という平凡な少女と、精霊マッドメンと交信する霊的な力を持つ、ガワン族の酋長の子、コドワの恋の行方・・・と、あらすじはこの辺で。

古いマンガですが、アマゾンなどではまだ購入できます。パプアニューギニアを旅したい人、または渡航前という人も、ガイドブックとは一味違った参考文献として必携の書といえるでしょう。
