Green Brain Coral Under Water(01 of06)
Open Image Modal
One of the strongest coral species in the ocean, brain coral can live for up to 200 years.\n\nJames Nicholson\'s image reveals the beauty of live green brain coral captured under water. One full polyp grabs the center of attention with four polyps as neighbors. The purple walled corallites taken with LED illumination provide a breathtaking contrast.\n (credit:James Nicholson, NOAA/NOS/NCCOS Center for Coastal Environmental Health & Biomolecular Research, Fort Johnson Marine Lab, Charleston, SC, USA. A rotifer captured in a pond near Issaquah, Washington won Charles Krebs first prize. At 0.1-0.5 mm long, rotifers inhabit fresh water environments and are known for their distinct ears and cylinder shaped body. (credit:Charles Krebs, Issaquah,WA, USA. Stink Bug Eggs(03 of06)
Open Image Modal
Stink bugs are agricultural pests that exist throughout the world. When disturbed, they emit a characteristic foul-smelling odor. \r\n\r\nIn Haris Antonopoulos\' photo, he captures the beauty of the so-called pests using brightfield illumination. Fruitfly Ovaries And Uterus(04 of06)
Open Image Modal
Fruit flies reproduce at astonishing rates and may lay hundreds of eggs in their brief lifespan.\r\n\r\nUsing fluorescence microscopy, Gunnar Newquist\'s captures fruit fly ovaries and uterus in this beautiful image. Eggs are stained red, a specific function of the mutant fly strain. (credit:Gunnar Newquist, University of Nevada, Reno, USA. Seventh Prize, 2011 Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition®)
Golden Chloroplasts(05 of06)

Diatoms are photosynthesizing algae and are found in almost every aquatic environment including fresh and marine waters and soils. \r\n\r\nTaken from the North Sea, Wolfgang Bettighofer captures a live diatom\'s living cell nuclei along with chloroplasts and a bacteria colony above. Bluegreen Alga(06 of06)

Gerd Guenther used darkfield illumination to show the spherical colonies of Nostoc commune, a blue-green alga. Blue-green algae occur naturally in surface waters and are a species of microscopic bacteria that are photosynthetic.
