ソチオリンピックはフィギュアスケート男子シングルのショートプログラムで、金メダル候補に挙げられていたエフゲニー・プルシェンコ（ロシア）が、本番直前の6分間練習でトリプルアクセルを跳んだ直後に腰を押さえ、演技を棄権した。プルシェンコは現役引退の意向を明らかにした。
プルシェンコは観客席に手を振って審判席に歩み寄り、棄権を告げた。場内に棄権が告げられると、プルシェンコは再び観客席に手を振り、胸に手を当ててリンクを後にした。
コーチのアレクセイ・ミシン氏によると、プルシェンコは前日（水曜日）の練習中に古傷の腰に痛みが再発し、スケートができない状態だったという。
NHKによるとプルシェンコは「きのうの練習から痛みを感じていたが、直前練習で3回転ジャンプを飛んだときに痛みが悪化した。オリンピックよりも体を選んだ。こういう形で自分のキャリアを終えるのは残念だが、神様が引退しろと言っているのだろう。今後はアイスショーに出たり、ビジネスをしたりしたい」などと話したという。
