ローマ教皇が夜になると教皇庁を抜け出す理由

バチカンのローマ教皇庁には、貧しい人たちに施す品物である「施物」(せもつ)の分配を担当する大司教がいる。そのコンラート・クラジェウスキー大司教に対して行われた最近のインタビューで、大司教は夜間に貧しい人々に施し物を与えるためにローマの街へ訪問しているが、そのときにローマ教皇も同行することがあるらしいことが明らかになった。

フランシスコ教皇は、まだ「ホルヘ・マリオ・ベルゴリオ枢機卿」だったとき、夜間にホームレスにパンを配るために抜け出し、道端に彼らと一緒に座ってパンを食べながら、彼らが愛されていることを示したことで知られている。クラジェウスキー大司教が新しい教皇のAlmoner(施物分配担当者)に任命されたとき、教皇は大司教に対して、「オフィスの机はもう不要だ。街に直接行き、困っている人を探しなさい」と述べたのだという

ローマの情報筋がハフィントン・ポストに話したところによると、バチカンの警備に当たっているスイス人衛兵たちが、「教皇が普通の司祭服を身に付けて、ホームレスの人々と会うために夜間に外出している」と認めたとのことだ。

夜間に外出していたローマ教皇は現在のフランシスコ教皇が初めてではない。10世紀のヨハネス13世が夜にこっそり抜け出してローマの美女を堪能したという話はいくつかあるし、ピウス12世が第二次世界大戦中に、フランシスコ会の修道服に着替えて、ローマのユダヤ系住民を安全な場所に移す支援をしたという報告もある。

2010年にはベネディクト16世も、事前の通知なしにバチカンを出て、美術展を訪れている。
