宮内庁は4月24日、秋篠宮ご夫妻の次女で国際基督教大（ICU）3年の佳子さま（22）が9月から来年6月までイギリス中部のリーズ大学に留学されると発表した。産経ニュースなどが報じた。
履修科目は未定だが、心理学や美術に関心を持たれているという。
宮内庁によると、佳子さまは昨年１０月、ＩＣＵの交換留学プログラムに応募され、書類選考や面接試験などを経て今年３月にリーズ大での受け入れが決まった。教職員と相談し、世界各国から留学生が集まるなど文化的に多様性がある同大を選ばれたという。

外国滞在は学習院大1年だった2013年8月に夏休みを利用してアメリカでホームステイをして以来となる。佳子さまはこの翌年に学習院大を中退し、15年4月にICUに入学した。
リーズ大学は1904年に設立された総合大学で、イギリス中部の人口70万人余りの都市、リーズにある。NHKニュースによると、佳子さまは以前から海外留学に関心があり、リーズ大学が毎年、世界各国から6000人以上の留学生を受け入れ、文化的な多様性や国際性が高く、幅広い分野の履修が可能だと聞き、希望したという。
佳子さまの姉の眞子さまも、同じく国際基督教大学に在学中、イギリスのエディンバラ大学に留学した経験がある。
