イギリスのエリザベス女王が、10月24日、88歳で初めてTwitterにつぶやいた。ツイート内容は「展示会を開催できることを嬉しく思います。皆さんに楽しんでもらいたいと思います」という内容だ。イギリス王室の公式アカウント(@BritishMonarchy)を通じて投稿した。

「今日、@ScienceMuseumで『通信の歴史』の展示を開始することを嬉しく思います。皆さんが来場して、楽しんでもらいたいと思います。 エリザベス・R」

Elizabeth R.のRは「Regina」の略。ラテン語女王の意味

イギリスのガーディアン紙によると、この日エリザベス女王は、ロンドン科学博物館で始まった情報通信技術をテーマにした企画展「通信の歴史」のオープニングイベントに、Twitter色のドレスと帽子で登場。手袋をはずしてタブレット端末の画面にゆっくりタッチすると、冒頭のコメントがTwitterに投稿された。

しかし、この投稿について「本当に女王がツイートしたのか」という指摘があり、議論を巻き起こした。女王はiPadを操作しているが、実際のツイートはiPhoneで投稿されたものだというのだ。

王室の担当者はアメリカのテクノロジー系ニュースサイトVergeの取材に対し、「あくまでも女王がツイートした」と主張。どのように送信したかについては議論を避け、単に「Processology(プロセソロジー)」と述べたという。

Processology」はジャーナリストの問い合わせを煙に巻くときによく使われる言葉だ。「主流の政策とは外れたこと」を意味し、普通の人にとってはどうでもいいことなのに、ジャーナリストはしばしば「プロセス(過程)」を気にするという状況を皮肉って用いられる。

そのためTech Crunchは、エリザベス女王の初ツイートに関する疑惑を「王室の永遠の謎」と題して報じた
