10月30日にルーマニアの首都ブカレストにあるナイトクラブで火災が発生し、多数の死者を出した。大惨事はかねてから批判されていた政権の腐敗を糾弾する抗議デモを呼び、首相が退陣、区長が身柄を拘束される事態に発展している。ロイター通信によると、火事は10月30日、ブカレストのナイトクラブ「コレクティブ・クラブ」で起きた。ロックバンドの演奏中、火花が発砲断熱材を燃やし、中にいた400人近い人々が1つしかない入り口に殺到した。被害者は国内外の病院に搬送されたが、AP通信によると8日までに、バンドのドラマーを含む45人が死亡した

この事故が契機となり、7月に脱税や資金洗浄などの罪で起訴され、腐敗が批判されてきたポンタ首相らへの大規模な抗議デモが起きた。イギリスのガーディアンによると、11月3日には約2万人が参加。穴の空いた国旗(1989年にチャウシェスク政権に民主化を求めたデモで使われ、ルーマニア民主化のシンボルとなっている)を掲げ「恥を知れ」「虐殺者」と叫んだ。

この火事で、ポンタ首相と、事故が起きたブカレスト地区の区長は4日に辞任。区長は、消防が許可していないナイトクラブに営業許可を与えた疑いで、7日に検察に身柄を拘束された。腐敗への抗議デモは、小規模になったものの週末も続き、数千人が「腐敗が(ナイトクラブの犠牲者を)殺した」「私たちは帰らない。死者が許さない」と訴えた
