食肉業界に対する批判や怒りは、決して目新しい問題ではない。その仕組みにおける欠陥は、いくつもの書籍やドキュメンタリー、さらには盗撮ビデオによって暴露されている。
その多くは人々の怒りを駆り立てようとするものだが、そういった動きがかえって、大衆の目から食品業界を守るための法律の制定を招く場合もある。米国の13州には、Food libel law（Food Disparagement Law）と呼ばれる、「風評被害」を防ぐ州法があり、食品業界は「中傷」に対して訴訟が起こしやすくなっている。
いっぽう、2011年に制作されたドキュメンタリー映画『サンサーラ』から抜粋したこのビデオクリップは、芸術性の高い手法で、現代の食品加工を探求している。
一切の解説のない、6分間にまとめられたそれぞれの場面は、観る者を鶏や牛、豚の飼養・加工施設、スーパーマーケット、ファストフードレストランを巡る旅に連れ出し、肥満した患者が医師の診察を受ける場面で終わる。豚が殴られる場面や、動物の待遇改善を求めて集結する活動家たちの場面はない。
サンサーラで取り上げられているテーマは食品業界だけではない（予告編はこちら）。実のところ制作者たちは、いかなる主張も行わないと述べている。
「われわれの映画は、知性による経験よりも、感情や内面的な旅に重点を置いている」と、プロデューサーを務めたマーク・マギッドソンは『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』紙に話している。「何かを主張しようとしているのではない」
公式ウェブサイトによると、サンサーラとはサンスクリット語で「永遠に廻りつづける生命の輪」（輪廻）を意味し、「われわれを含むそれぞれの命を貫いて続く、とらえにくい相互のつながりの流れを探し求める映画制作者の出発点」を表現したものだという。
5年の期間をかけて25に及ぶ国々で撮影されたこの作品は、「われわれのライフサイクルが、地球のリズムをどのように反映しているか」を示すための取り組みなのだ。
