佐野元春、デビュー35周年 「伝えたいことは、その時代とともにある」

佐野元春、ソングライターとしての姿勢「僕が個人的に言いたいことは何もない」

デビュー35周年を迎えたシンガー・ソングライター、佐野元春。35年間、真摯にロックンロールと向き合い続けてきた一方で、1980年代にはすでに今に続く新たな音楽マネジメントの形を提示していたり、プロモーションにいちはやくWEBツールを取り入れたりするなど、常に時代の先を読んだ新しい挑戦を続けてきた。シンガー・ソングライターといえば、自分の心の奥底にある思いを吐露していくタイプの人が多いが、佐野は「本当のことを言うと、曲を書くときに僕が個人的に言いたいことは何もない」と明かす。ソングライティングの第一人者が考える、シンガー・ソングライターのあるべき姿とはどんなものなのだろうか。

■ソングライターは“メディア” 自分の思いを入れないほうがうまくいく

――世代を問わずに佐野さんの音楽が支持されている大きな理由のひとつとして、間違いなく歌詞の素晴らしさがあると思います。その歌詞に関して、35年を振り返って、伝えたいことに変化はありましたか

【佐野元春】 伝えたいことは、その時代と共にあるもので、いくらでもテーマは“そこ”にあって、アイディアが尽きることは、おそらくないんじゃないかな。よく言うんですが、僕が作ってきたアルバムは、その時代、その時代の、僕の新聞のようなものかなって思っているんです。そして、曲のタイトルが、ヘッドライン。だから、「僕は悲しいので、こんな思いをみんな聴いて、同情して」みたいな曲は、僕は絶対に歌わない。“私の歌”、“僕の歌”というのは、一切書いてこなかった。“私”が主体じゃなくて、“私たち”が主体の音楽を上手く書けたらいいなと、ずっと思いながら続けてきました。本当のことを言うと、曲を書く時に、僕が個人的に言いたいことは、何もないんですよ。ソングライターって、言ってみれば“メディア”みたいなものです。この社会で暮らしていて、自分の身の回りにいろいろなことが起こる。友人や大切な人の身に何かが起こる。社会で何かが起こる。権力を持った人間が、何か横暴なことをやる。それで、僕の身近な人たちが苦しんでいるのをたまたま見たりする。そうすると僕は、それを“メディア”としてスケッチして、文字にして、曲にしていくんです。だからそこに、僕の思いを入れない方が、上手くいくわけです。そうして、上手にスケッチできた時に、いい曲が生まれる。だから、客観的な表現になるんだろうね。そこが大切であって、僕のような風来坊が考えていることなんて、どうでもいいことなんです(笑)。ただ、言葉の表現は気を付けています。

――具体的には、どういう点を意識しているのですか?

【佐野】 10代の頃、ガールフレンドに「あなたの作る曲の言葉は、ちょっと難しい。熟語が多過ぎる」と言われて、「ああ、そうか」と思ったんです。それ以来、なるべく平たい言葉を使うようにしています。たとえば、「難解」ではなく、「難しい」と書く。すると、上手く言えたりするんです。もし、「難しいポエトリーを現代詞的に書いて曲にしろ」と言われたら、僕は1日に5曲くらい作れるよ(笑)。ただそれは、ゲームみたいなものであって、みんなと一緒に楽しめるものではない。音楽が総合芸術になってしまって、そんなの勝手にやってろという話になってしまう。僕は、みんなと楽しめる音楽を作っていきたいから、どんなに難しいテーマでも、日常の言葉に開き、メロディと、ビートと、言葉の組み合わせによって、みんなが感じているイメージを作り上げようとしている。それが僕のソングライティングで、そこにクリエイティブな時間を費やしています。

-――ポピュラー音楽における芸術性と大衆性、つまりアートとポップのバランスに悩む若いクリエイターもたくさんいますが、その点について、佐野さんはどのように考えていますか?

【佐野】 アートとポップをどう両立させるか。それは永遠の課題かもしれないですね。でも、「永遠の課題だね」と傍観しているだけじゃ前進しないから、どんどん実験するっていうことが、僕は楽しいんじゃないかなって思います。本当に革新的なことは、皆の中にスッと入ってきます。

■僕はノスタルジーのための音楽は作らない

――なるほど。新しい家電にしても、確かに革新的なテクノロジーであるほど、とても身近なものになりますよね。

【佐野】 革新的すぎるものって、人々はその革新性に気付かないんです。そういう表現もできますよね。

――とてもよく分かります。その真の革新性を生み出すために、クリエイターたちは格闘し続けているんですね。

【佐野】 どうかな? 汗水流してハーハー言ってるわけじゃないけどね(笑)。でもやっぱり、自分の曲を歌って、自分自身がエキサイトするものでなければ、大抵は駄作だなって思っている。だいたい、僕なんかより、もっと感受性の強い人たちが聴いてくれているんだから、リスナーを絶対に見くびったりはしないし、いつも恐る恐る「大丈夫かな?」と思いながらソングライティングしています。だから僕は、大衆音楽を作る人ではないかもしれません。でも、誰よりも大衆音楽を作りたいと願っているアーティストでもあるんです。

――そんな佐野さんが、35年間、音楽を生み出す時に意識し続けてきたことは何でしょうか?

【佐野】 僕が作っている音楽はロックンロールなので、どんなに難しい表現の曲を作ったとしても、常に15歳から25歳の聴き手に聴いてもらうことを考えています。なぜならば、クラシック音楽やジャズは、大人が知的に聴く音楽として適しているんだけれども、僕がやっているロックンロールは、常に時代と共にあり、15歳から25歳というビビットな感性を持った人達の隣にある音楽です。だから僕は、ソングライターとして、ロッカーとして、自分が作る曲は、とにかく15歳から25歳の人達に聴いてもらうということを忘れずに、彼らが楽しんでくれるように作っています。もちろん、同世代のほかのアーティストが、古いファンのノスタルジーに訴えかける音楽を作ることも、ファンへのサービスとして尊いし、素晴らしいことだと思う。でも僕は、ノスタルジーのために音楽は作らない。15歳から25歳は、自分を振り返ってみても、一番多感な年齢です。その彼らに楽しんでもらえる音楽を僕は作る。かと言って、彼らが好んで聴いている音楽をマーケティングリサーチして、それに合った曲を作るなんていう馬鹿な真似は、絶対にやらない。常に今の時代にビビットに生きて、スパッと切れば、そこから血が出るようなリリック、音楽を、ずっと作って、演奏していきたいと思っています。
