共同通信によると、現時点での行方不明者は81人。地元当局は消防や警察など約3000人を投入して、行方不明者の捜索・救出活動に当たっている。しかし、二次災害の恐れから救出作業は極めて難航しており、現場に駆けつけた行方不明者の家族は不満を募らせているという。
人民日報によると、大雨で、2年以上にわたって積み上げられていた100メートル以上の建設残土が緩み、38万平方メートルにわたって押し流された。土砂は工場14棟、従業員宿舎3棟などを含む、33の建物を破壊した。
ロイターによると、現場は1年前から危険性が指摘されていた。
同市が発行する「深セン・イブニング・ポスト」は昨年１０月、残土投棄の場所を他に見つけるのは「非常に困難」になりつつあるとする匿名の高官の話を掲載。その上で、深センにある１２カ所の破棄場所について「持ちこたえられるのは来年（２０１５年）が限度」と指摘していた。
今回土砂崩れが起きた場所は今年２月に閉鎖される予定だったが、当局のニュースサイトによると、期限以降も土や廃棄物が運び込まれていたと付近の作業員が証言している。
