アップル社がその輝きを失いつつある新たな兆候が見つかった。米国のスマートフォン満足度調査で、「iPhone」が首位の座から転落したのだ。
この調査は、米国顧客満足度指数（ACSI）が7月31日（米国時間）に公開したもので、「GALAXY S III」と「GALAXY Note II」という2種類のサムスン社製スマートフォンが、米国の顧客満足度で同率首位となった。
ACSIは、それぞれのスマートフォンに0点～100点のスコアを付けている（最高は100点）。Galaxy S IIIとGalaxy Note IIはどちらも84点を獲得し、「iPhone 5」と「iPhone 4S」は82点という2番目に高いスコアで3位を分け合った。「iPhone 4」は81点という3番目に高いスコアで5位にランクインしている。「GALAXY S4」はこの調査に含まれていないが、それは調査時期がこの機種の発売前だったためだ。
ACSIの調査は、米国に住む4112名のスマートフォン所有者を対象に行われたもので、参加者は全体的な経験（顧客期待度、全体的な品質の印象、金額と比べた価値、顧客忠誠心）と、品質に関する経験（電話としての使いやすさ、テキストメッセージの送受信のしやすさ、バッテリー寿命の点から見た性能など）を評価したと、ACSIの広報担当者は31日、ハフィントン・ポストに対して説明した。
今回の結果は、2012年の調査と大きく異なっている。ACSIが2012年5月に発表したレポートでは、iPhoneが83点で首位であり、サムスン製品は71点、BlackBerry社製品は69点だった（今回の2013年調査では、「BlackBerry Curve」が67点、「BlackBerry Bold」が64点となっている）。
調査会社Strategy Analytics社の発表によれば、サムスン社は2013年第2四半期に世界で最も利益を上げたスマートフォンメーカーとなった。また、2012年には、サムスン社が2億1300万台のスマートフォンを出荷する一方、アップル社は1億3580万台だったと見られている。
2013年のApple社は敗北が続いている。2012年10月には700ドル超の値を付けていた同社の株価は、7月31日時点では450ドル近くに下がっている。ジャーナリストたちは、次の非常に革新的な製品が出るとすればそれはどんなものだろうかと、あれこれ推測している。また、要するに「GALAXY」は今のiPhoneよりクールなのだと見る者もいる。
アップルは9月に新製品を出すと見られており、今後の行方が注目される。
