ロシア初の冬季大会「ソチオリンピック」の閉会式が2月24日未明（日本時間）、ソチの黒海沿岸部にある「フィシトオリンピックスタジアム」で行われ、17日間に渡る大会に幕が下ろされた。
ソチオリンピックは、冬の大会で史上最も多い88の国と地域から約2900人の選手が参加。7競技98種目が行われた。
閉会式がスタートすると、会場全体は、青い幻想的な世界に包まれた。開会式に登場した「愛」を意味するリュボフという名の少女が再び登場。「ロシア文化をめぐる旅」をテーマにした演出には4600人が参加、開会式で開かなかった四輪を五輪にする粋な演出も見られた。
ロシアの国旗は、金メダルを獲得した選手たちによって運ばれ、世界的な指揮者のワレリー・ゲルギエフ氏の指揮による、ロシアの少年少女合唱団の合唱が「春の到来」を告げた。フィギュアスケート女子の浅田真央選手がフリープログラムで使用した、ロシアが誇る作曲家ラフマニノフのピアノ協奏曲第2番の生演奏のほか、ボリショイ劇場などによる華麗なバレエも披露された。
日本選手団の旗手は、開会式につづきカーリングの小笠原歩選手が務めた。日本からは、橋本聖子団長をはじめ119人が参加。フィギュアスケート男子で金メダルを獲得した羽生結弦選手やフィギュア選手らも揃って参加した。
日本選手団は、1998年長野大会の10個（金5、銀1、銅4）に次ぐ、冬季オリンピック大会2番目、国外大会では最多のメダル8個（金1、銀4、銅3）を獲得。入賞者の総数は73人となった。
