2月7日、2014年の冬季オリンピックが、ロシア南部のソチで開幕した。現地時間の7日20時すぎ（日本時間8日午前1時すぎ）、ソチの黒海沿岸部にある「フィシトオリンピックスタジアム」で開会式が開かれた。
開会式のテーマは「ロシアの夢」。主役はロシア語で「愛」を意味する名の少女が演じた。180を超える民族が暮らす広大なロシア連邦の成り立ちを、古代ロシアから帝政ロシア、共産主義時代を経て、現代ロシアへ至る時代絵巻でつづり、ロシアの威信をかけた壮大な物語を上演。世界的なバレエとオペラの殿堂、モスクワのボリショイ劇場をはじめ、ロシア各地の劇場から、総勢3000人の歌手やバレエダンサーが参加したという。
史上最多となる世界87の国と地域からの選手団が参加。日本選手団は、最後に入場する開催国ロシアの前に入場した。主将は、41歳で7度目の出場を果たしたノルディックスキー・ジャンプの葛西紀明選手。旗手は結婚、出産を経て8年ぶりに五輪出場するカーリングの小笠原歩選手が務めた。総勢248人（選手は113人）。女子選手は65人で、冬季オリンピックでは初めて48人の男子を上回った。

聖火は、テニスのシャラポアさんやレスリングのカレリンさんらのリレーによって、最終ランナーの2人へ。バレエ音楽「火の鳥」が響き渡るなか、アイスホッケーのトレチャクさん、フィギュアスケート金メダリストのロドリナさんが場外の聖火台に火が灯した。
ロシアのプーチン大統領をはじめ、安倍晋三首相ら40カ国を超える首脳も開会式に出席。一方で、ロシアで成立した反同性愛法を背景に、欧米の首脳は開会式は相次いで欠席した。またテロ対策のため、開会式にはセキュリティゲートが設けられ、入場者4万人を対象に厳重な身体検査や持ち物検査が行われたという。
