アメリカ合衆国の連邦法定休日。11月第4木曜日。1621年にプリマス植民地のピルグリム・ファーザーズが移住後初めての収穫を神に感謝したことを記念する。3日間続いた祭典にはインディアンも招かれ,七面鳥や鹿肉のご馳走が出された。ニューイングランド地方のピューリタンを中心に祝われていた感謝祭は,アメリカ独立後,1789年11月26日に,ワシントン大統領により全国的祝日とされた。その後,リンカーン大統領により11月最終木曜日と定められたが,ニューディール期にルーズベルト大統領は,クリスマス前の買物景気をあおるため1週間くり上げをおこなった。

オバマ大統領は、感謝祭前日の11月27日、太り過ぎた2匹の七面鳥「キャラメル」と「ポップコーン」に「恩赦」を与えました。

これは、感謝祭のシーズンに行われるホワイトハウスの恒例行事で、感謝祭料理として供される七面鳥に対して「刑の執行」を中止するセレモニーです。

オバマ大統領が在任中に恩赦を与えた七面鳥は10羽。これは、薬物犯罪を犯した人間に与えた恩赦とほぼ同じ数なのです。

オバマ大統領が恩赦を与えた39人のうち、薬物犯罪の受刑者は11人しかいません。この数は現代の歴代大統領の中で最も少ない数です。
